Hopefully there won't be a $100 admission charge! |

First the conference at MIT and now this? I left town and am missing quite a bit.
Another reason to move back?

This is very interesting. I wish that I could attend but probably won't be able to do so.
As a minor point of clarification, since the Journal's announcement of the sponsoring groups had some of them run together, I've listed them separately below.
*Harvard University Department of Statistics
*Section on Statistics in Sports of the American Statistical Association
*Boston Chapter of the American Statistical Association
*Section on Operations Research in Sports of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. |

They now have a listing of presentations up on the site:
http://www.amstat.org/chapters/boston/nessis/program.html
Looks like Dan Rosenbaum will be presenting a paper that Dave Lewin contributed to, and Mike Zarren will be part of a panel. Also Justin Wolfers will be presenting his paper on racial bias in officiating. |

Thanks for posting the link, John. The program participants include some people who are well known in the field of statistics, in general, notably Carl Morris, Cyrus Mehta, and Robin Lock. (I've known the first two for many years.)
Having just looked over all of the abstracts and the affiliations of the authors, I almost wonder if statisticians at Penn are working on anything other than sports statistics research these days. |

The abstract for a poster presentation by Kenny Shirley "A Markov model for basketball" caught my eye. What it finds about productivity after offensive and defensive rebounds and independence of events might add to the discussion. Anybody with thoughts about the approach? A report back on this topic after the presentation would be of interest. |

It's similar to something I've been grappling with for a while. Markov chains for something like basketball is tough, because how specific do you want to be with it? Too specific and it's too difficult to track and probably not instructive. Too vague and it doesn't tell you much. |

Are there current updates on NESSIS? Now that it's 2-1/2 weeks away, do we know more definitely which APBR types will be attending...in addition to Dan Rosenbaum who will be presenting and Mike Zarren who will be a panelist.
Upon my inquiry, co-organizer Mark Glickman has given one assurance:
> You can definitely register on-site - the lecture
> hall is large enough so that the event won't sell
> out. Please spread the word if anyone asks.
I.e. anyone unsure of whether they can attend will have the luxury of being able to decide up until just shortly before the event.
By contrast, the MIT Sloan Sports Business Conference last February 10 sold out a few days in advance. |

I'm there too. Conveniently it's the day after the C's media day, so I can double dip. See you guys up there. |

Great, I can't wait to have John peering over my shoulder for media day all day Friday... Sigh...
Anyways, as those who pre-registered for the conference were notified last week, I won't be able to be a part of the scheduled panel at NESSIS due to a sudden requirement here at work. But I hope to be there for part of the morning session and will probably also be meeting with some people Friday night. My apologies for the fact I won't be there for the panel.

I finally found a reasonably priced ticket (though I'll have to fly overnight Friday, arrive Boston Sat. morning) so I'll be there.

I'm really bummed I'll be missing this.
Can I ask anyone to pick up a copy of the abstract book and any relevant posters and mail them to me? I'll pick up the tab for the postage. |
