Beginning 2/7, I will be moving to ESPN in Bristol, CT. I will be Director of Production Analytics - developing and implementing analytic methods across all sports.
Being with an NBA team has been a tremendous experience and I will miss it. I've done what I could to keep the Nuggets winning even after I leave, though my ability to impact them will definitely diminish.
It will be nice again to be able to talk about what I'm doing, something I haven't been able to do for years. I won't give away a number of secrets, but I will put more out there, if just some of the translation between numbers and words.
Since this board started, sports analytics has come a long way and basketball has been a huge part of that. I'm hoping to take what we've learned and developed in basketball to create useful and interesting stories about the rest of the sports world.
Looking forward to seeing people at the Sloan Conference 3/4 and 3/5. _________________ Dean Oliver

That's great, Dean. It's fun for a while to be in constant competition, and it should be fun for a while to just make progress for progress' sake.
Let me know if you can use a hand. I'm for user-friendly numbers, you know. _________________ `

As others have said, congrats. The point about public info vs proprietary info is pretty key, that's a nice gain for the study of hoopstats.
I actually go to espn.com as rarely as possible (too much web garbage, flash crapola, and other stuff that my browser settings don't like). Does it have blogs or comment boards where discussion of basketball analytics takes place? If not, will it after DeanO arrives?
Working against that is the abysmally low signal-to-noise ratio on just about every website that's widely used by the public (I'm talking about not just espn.com, but also yahoo sports, the NY Times, etc. etc.). OTOH, although I'm far more interested in pro basketball than college basketball, given the wide interest in college basketball, the espn site might be a place where basketball analytics of all sorts (meaning both pro and college) could be reported upon and discussed. I suppose one could argue that Basketball Prospectus is already designed to fill that role. |

I'm looking forward to this. I hope they don't put you behind the pay wall (To read the rest of this comment, you must become an Insider). |

Another smart NBA guy now working for ESPN. Nice! Oliver, Hollinger, Haberstroh, Abbott, Arnovitz, et al. Even a weekly contribution from Kevin Pelton. I knew there was a reason it was my home page... |

Kudos, Dean! Yet another reason to renew my ESPN Insider subscription. |
