All these are with the same team as last year.
Paul, Harris, and Parker are bouncing back from bad (injury) seasons.
Ellis returning to trajectory after 2 off years.
Millsap was also this good year before last, when he started. --
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/millspa01/splits/2009/
And he was among the most improved that year --
http://sonicscentral.com/apbrmetrics/viewtopic.php?t=1964
DeShawn has played just 99 minutes. His WS/48 is about 10 times his career rate:
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/stevede01.html
RJefferson in 420 minutes is enjoying career best TS%, WS/48, Blk%, TO%, and ORtg. _________________ `

By request, here's the bottom of the list (inverted). Players who are contributing much less than last year, still in big minutes.

Each of the Miami big 3 on the most slippage list. Looks to me like diminishing returns from 3 #1s moving into the trio are in play to some degree beyond the personal year to year stories. Whatever the gains by other Heat players combined, none of those individually made the top 15 of the improvement list due to minutes and size of role. |

The one area where it was almost a given where they'd all improve was effective shooting%. LeBron's down .050, Wade and Bosh are unimproved, and all 3 are doing less shooting.
Last year, their combined 36-minute averages were something like 88 pts and 25 reb; this year, 75 and 21. _________________ `

Sorted by team, players whose 'extra' ewins are at least .20 more or less than what last seasons rates would have produced; or who are at least .10 in extra (or fewer) eWins and at least .20 changed in eWins per 484 minutes (1.00 = avg, zero = replacement level).
In the nearly-blank lines are the team totals, representing the summary improvements of only those players who played last year.

It's funny that Ellis dropped off and now Curry is up there. Not surprising to me. Ellis has considerably regressed since his hot start and Curry is starting to come on.
What about Raymond Felton?

Here's what I've got with Advanced SPM this year:
I'm listing the regressed ASPM values for this year as the best estimate for what the player has done so far, along with the projections before the year and the difference between them.
Landry Fields has been the biggest surprise--but of course, he's a rookie.
Code: | Tm Player %Min RegrSPM Proj. SPM Difference
NYK Landry Fields 64% 1.08 -5.28 6.36
OKC Russell Westbrook 76% 7.74 2.27 5.47

NJN Kris Humphries 48% 2.02 -2.45 4.46
ORL Brandon Bass 45% 2.59 -1.23 3.82
PHI Elton Brand 67% 2.93 -0.89 3.82
LAL Shannon Brown 40% 2.58 -1.23 3.80
ORL Jameer Nelson 50% 5.44 1.69 3.75
HOU Brad Miller 38% 2.12 -1.24 3.36
CHI Derrick Rose 75% 5.00 1.78 3.21

Now I'm not taking into account playing time here (this isn't VORP expected vs. VORP actual, though I could do that). I'm simply looking at the biggest improvement among players playing over 35% of the team's minutes.
Also: AGING was already built into the projections. So a player that was projected to age down hill but hasn't would show up here; also, a young player would not get credit for EXPECTED improvement. This is simply comparing performance to expected true talent level for this season. _________________ GodismyJudgeOK.com/DStats

By all means, share and share alike.
Felton is about .28 eWins ahead of last year's production, ranking him 53rd in the league, 2nd on the Knicks. He's getting an extra 3 Pts, 1.7 Ast, and 1.1 TO.

Again, this is difference from expected, not difference from last year. |
This is great. And not something I can quite imagine doing, creating 'expected' values.
Westbrook improved a lot last year; does that increase or diminish his expected improvement from year 2 to year 3 ?
Brand and Davis are coming off of down years. Is the expectation that they bounce back, or that they continue to decline?
What can you say about players with phenomenal improvement in limited minutes (Deshawn Stevenson) ? _________________ `

This is great. And not something I can quite imagine doing, creating 'expected' values.

Basically, the projection just weights the previous years' data using this weighting:
1.000
0.439
0.193
0.085
0.037
0.016
0.007
0.003
0.001
where the 1 is for data from last year.
Then, the data is regressed towards a predicted value for a player with a given MPG profile on a given quality of team (again, this includes data from previous years, but last year is weighted even more heavily.)
Then, a small overall regression to a single value is applied for all players (this downgrades players with very small sample sizes for both of the previous segments).
Finally, an aging curve is applied to update forward to this year.
It's a basic method of projection, used often by baseball projection systems.
I then use the projection as a Bayesian Prior for this year; I'm running a continuously-updated estimation of each player's current true talent level. _________________ GodismyJudgeOK.com/DStats

It's turning into a runaway.
Standardized, Gordon's scoring is up 38%, rebounding 27%, Ast 67%, Blk 80%; TO up 26%, Stl down 11%.
Last year's .72 eW/484 min implies he was at 72% of average NBA effectiveness; he's almost doubled that, to 137%.
Last year, he was at 42 percentile; this year at 86.

Figuring most readers have wider screens, I've slipped a few more columns in here. If anyone requests, I will issue a slimmer version. _________________ `

My ASPM disagrees strongly with your evaluation of Eric Gordon. I don't even have him as good as Mike Conley this year! _________________ GodismyJudgeOK.com/DStats

Fight! Seriously, though, I think it's great when models disagree. That's when you actually learn something new. What's the cause here? _________________ http://www.thecity2.com
