In an astounding change of direction and style that stunned the Rockets and the NBA, owner Leslie Alexander has chosen Boston Celtics statistical analyst Daryl Morey to be his next general manager. Morey will succeed Carroll Dawson after the 2006-07 season.

Morey, the Celtics' senior vice president of operations and information, has worked under Boston owner Wyc Grousbeck for the past three seasons but has never been a player, coach, scout or general manager.

Though many NBA teams, including the Rockets, have expanded their study of statistical player evaluations, the hiring of Morey could be viewed as the NBA's first move toward baseball's Moneyball trend. Moneyball was a 2003 book that detailed the Oakland Athletics' move away from scouting in favor of more statistical-based analysis. Several baseball teams, including the Red Sox with general manager Theo Epstein, have hired executives with non-traditional baseball backgrounds.

In choosing Morey, Alexander has opted for an analytical approach to player evaluation in addition to the scouting systems already in place. Because of that, Alexander said he wanted Lindsey back.

"I love Dennis," Alexander said. "I want Dennis long-term. I love what Dennis does."

Morey, who will handle negotiations with agents and other GMs, also understands the need for input from those with basketball backgrounds.

"Basketball is an intensely human game, where the personal aspect is very, very important," Morey said in an interview with an MIT alumni publication in regard to his position with the Celtics. "Analysis can point you in the right direction, but it's possible to take it too far.

"A Danny Ainge needs to integrate the analytical stuff with his knowledge and experience to make the right decision."

I dug up a little more info on Morey:

http://mitsloan.mit.edu/mba/alumni/morey.php

http://www.rallenhome.com/blog/mit-sdm/2005/04/daryl-morey-svp-operations-and.html

http://alum.mit.edu/ne/noteworthy/profiles/morey.html

Apparently he worked for STATS, Inc. in college. If you read through the second link there are some strong hints that he's read Basketball on Paper and is a proponent of Dean's four factors approach.

Thanks for the heads up, John.

So, what's this mean for Van Gundy? JVG is a strong personaility; I've got to imagine Morey might want his own guy there.

I also wonder what this means about Tracy McGrady's availability.

Postolos leaving, puts the Morey hiring in a different light. Will someone be added above him or below him or both and what types?

"Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said he had not reached a decision about a successor or even if the Rockets' leadership would be structured as it has been."

I meant to suggest that there is

1) the possibility Morey will end up doing a lot of the business side in the long run - effectively replacing Postolos in that. And have a traditional basketball resume guy below him with a far amount of influence on basketball decisions
(or that could just be Van Gundy)

2) the possibility a traditional basketball resume will be installed above him

3) or both, with Morey being in the mix but not totally in charge, the middle guy who helps the CEO and the basketball guy talk, work together, and try to succeed with more use of stats.

If it goes any of these three ways it might not be a pure casestudy of a stat/moneyball guy doing their own thing 100%. His abilty to make calls and overall weight in the collective process will have to assessed over time. It might be very strong or moderate. I think it will be interesting which of the three models the owner chooses or if he is or becomes an active decisionmaker or if he moves towards a sale as has been speculated and Postolos leaving was foreshadowing of that. Maybe Postolos tries to buy the Rockets. That is what he knows best. Morey isnt a big name NBA fixture that might be viewed as an unwanted obstacle to a new owner or president.
