Hi all.
The last two years I have been in Philly pursuing an MBA from Wharton and an MA in International Studies (focus on China) from Penn's Lauder Institute. I just finished my course work and graduate next Sunday...now its time to get myself a jobby-job.
I've thoroughly enjoyed my experience the last two years, but it hasn't left me with the time or energy to be on this board very often. I'm excited to be back and look forward to catching up on what I've missed. |

I've just discovered this site. Loving what I see so far. I've been interested in stats since I was a kid. Recently fell in love with 82games.com and twominutewarning.
A bit about me: I'm 27, working on my 2nd MA, looking for a solid defensive ranking stat that isn't a pain to calculate. Also looking for an in-depth defensive stat that can be a pain to calculate, but really tells most of the story about a player's defensive competence.
Again, awesome site. Hoping to contribute, learn from those of you who have been doing this for some time. |

There's nothing really simple on the defensive side of things. Best estimate of defensive effectiveness is Dean Oliver's defensive rating, which uses box score stats to estimate stops. But it's not perfect. The on/off data at 82games is good information. The counterpart data is interesting, but has its weaknesses. Lately, some of us have been more interested in "extreme" tracking, which has yielded some interesting results. But, extreme tracking is not quick or simple. |

Hmm, found this board about a year ago, posted on the first page of this particular thread and in a few others and then promptly vanished because my computer crashed and I lost the link (and didn't ask anyone about it). Oops!
Anyway, I'm here again and it's like a breath of fresh air coming from some of the other forums I frequent. |

Welcome, Tyler. I was wondering how long it would take you to get here. |

Hey Kev. Like I said, check out the first page of this thread. You pointed me to it about a year ago or so, but I've been a ninny and not been posting/learning.

Hi all,
I stumbled onto this site through a wikipedia entry, I've also been interested in basketball and statistics. A little about myself, I'm a student in NY. I'm also a webmaster and I own an NBA website. |

Updated file now available. Last year I sent out a few dozens of my first edition. Thanks to feedback, a few corrections were made. Several current 4-5 year players have been added.
Career trajectories take many forms. There are the smooth rise-and-fall, the multiply-peaked, and stranger ones. Alongside the numbers, feast your eyes on the colored waves.
Mike G wrote: | ...I am offering to email members a rather large (7 meg) Excel file that summarizes the careers of 850 historic and current players, for seasons since 1952. I'm doing this with color charts which are generated by the accompanying stats.
The stats themselves are 'standardized' rates, and the 5 positive ones are added (weighted 1 each) in the visual representations. I have not included much to explain the origin of the numbers, but I have dropped clues here, at the old APBR-analysis site, and at APBR.
The more people who glance at the file, and the more questions I receive regarding it, the better I will know what explanations will be appreciated. And future editions may include these. If anyone would care to be a major or minor contributor to a future print edition, please be free with commentary and suggestions.
Relatively few members of this group have their e-mail address posted; so the straightforward thing is to email me so that I can just directly respond. Hotmail and Yahoo accept these large attachments. GMail seems to think there is something executable going on, and squelches it. |

Like most of you here, I am an avid basketball fanatic and a statistics geek- I've been making lists of basketball statistics/players for ages and am thrilled to have found a site full of like-minded people. |

Hi everyone. I've been a member of APBR for a couple years now. I was initially not happy with this new format, but I now concede that it clearly has opened up a forum for many more discussions, for which I am grateful.
I'm not a math guy, but I seem to be one of the older fellows on the site, so maybe there is some historical context to be lent (is that a word?). Played in college, coached at every level except professionally (I admit, mostly high school) and write a sports column for my local newspaper. One thing I haven't found on this site, and maybe I'm just not looking in the right places, are Ray LeBov's wonderful historical newsclippings that I always find fascinating. But I enjoy the posts, and I'm sure I'll be checking in at some point. |

Derek:
You probably want this forum:
http://www.apbr.org/forum/index.php
Plenty of RLee clippings there.
But feel free to read and contribute here, as well. _________________ `

Hello everyone, I'm new to the board. I just found out about this site as a link was posted on our Jazz board. The discussion seems to be very interesting and hopefully I'll have a chance to contribute at certain junctures. I'm clearly not as advanced (nor do I even understand) in statistical analysis as most here, so I'll probably be reading more than anything.
A little about me: I was born and raised in Salt Lake City and therefore a huge Jazz fan. I currently reside in Seattle and moved here about two years ago to attend school. |
