At what level does a player's Ast/TO ratio start to help his team's offensive effectiveness? Does the likely existence of system assists mean that this level would be higher for a point guard?

I noticed that 14 of the top 20 A/To guys at dougstats are on teams that made playoffs and of course it does have some positive effect. Both elements assists and turnovers matter and the turnovers are a four factor category; assists can suggest good passing and have positive impact on at least 2 of the other three (FG% and FT/FG) and maybe even offensive rebounding if the good passes creates a need for help defense and perhaps also allow some of the guys to focus more on rebounding than looking for their shot. But assists are not a four factor category on their won and I think that is right- if a team can shoot well and draw fouls that is great, with or without a high assist rate. I note that the top 10 teams on raw assists made the playoffs but 5 of the bottom 10 did too. Still I wonder if anyone has correlated team assists pace adjusted to winning, offensive rating, the four factors.

Among point guards 2.5 makes you top 30 overall for the position.
For shooting guards it is 1.8, SF 1.6, PF 1.2, C about .9.

It matters more among perimeter players but if you are at least 25% above position average (could be computed) that is worth noting.

The break-even points could very well be different for each position, I think.

If the PG is also a shooter and/or rebounder, that is different than if he just brings the ball up and passes. All these things create turnover opportunities.

TO do not help the offense, but Pts/Reb/Ast do. If you could separate out 'TO resulting from passes', you could have something. Otherwise, I doubt there is a simple answer to your question.
