Hello,
I would like to present some +/- data for the USA team from the first stage of the Olympic Games 2008.
Right now I didn't have time to calculate possesions, so below there are raw +/- numbers and pro-rated for 40 minutes - still I think worth a look.
Below are raw number - when the player was on and off the court:

After watching most of games I was counting that D.Wade will have the highest impact - and he nearly has. Still was a bit surprised with C. Bosh stats.
Below are game-by-game C.Bosh logs. In every game team has played much better on offense with him on the floor and not worse on defensive end.

EDIT: I went one more time through PbP from the official site and solved some small issues with order of plays.
It didn't have much impact (max. 5 units on accumulated raw +/- and small changes in player's order - still within one group), but right now I feel more steadfast with them :)

This is great stuff. Two quick questions:
1) Will you be providing updates based on the quarter-, semi-, and final round games?
2) Do you have actual raw lineup data available? If so, it would be interesting to see how an adjusted plus-minus analysis might come out. (There are some folks on this forum, including yours truly, who could run it if you aren't up for it.)
By the way, I'm not at all surprised by Bosh's stellar showing in these plus-minus numbers - although, frankly, I expected his greatest impact to show up on the defensive end (he's been incredibly disruptive covering the pick-and-roll, and has led to countless easy transition baskets - which perhaps accounts for his surprisingly large offensive impact).
I suspect that adjusted +/- analyses would give a boost to Lebron, who's playing most of his minutes with other lower-rated starters, and would reduce the rating for Paul, who benefits from playing a large number of minutes with Wade and Bosh (the two best players through the first round of games). |

Echoing the others, thanks for posting.
What jumps out to me is that for all the criticism Jason Kidd has taken for his play and particularly his reluctance to shoot, he hasn't hurt the USA all that much when he's been on the court. |

Stats form the quarterfinal against Australia:
Code: |
PLAYER MINUTES +/- OFF/40 DEF/40 NET
ANTHONY Carmelo 19 25 127 74 53
BRYANT Kobe 25 31 121 72 49
JAMES Lebron 26 29 116 71 45
KIDD Jason 16 17 124 81 43
HOWARD Dwight 14 13 118 80 37
Team USA 200 31 116 85 31
WILLIAMS Deron 20 15 114 84 30
BOSH Chris 17 11 115 88 26
REDD Michael 9 5 117 93 23
PRINCE Tayshaun 13 7 108 87 21
WADE Dwyane 16 3 117 109 7
BOOZER Carlos 6 0 99 99 0
PAUL Chris 19 -1 104 106 -2
|
So first of all, the group Kidd, Bryant, James, Anthony and Howard played in this game a little bit more together with success:
Code: |
OFF DEF +/-
32 17 15
|
As for Wade - take a look at his stats with(out) Chris Paul in this game:
Code: |
OFF DEF +/-
Wade with Paul 32 35 -3
Wade no Paul 16 10 6
Paul no Wade 17 15 2
|
and in all games so far:
Code: |
OFF DEF +/- OFF vs DEF
Wade with Paul 241 155 86 1,55
Wade no Paul 64 35 29 1,83
Paul no Wade 108 90 18 1,20
|
So it seems Wade is playing much better and is keeping Paul's raw numbers also on a high level.
I will try to put some more stats before the semifinals - not only for the USA Team. |

Do you have these breakdowns for other teams? I'd be particularly interested in Spain and Argentina. _________________ .....

We are right after first 'competitive' game for the USA Team on the Beijing 2008 Olympics Tournament - the semifinal with Argentina. Maybe the final result gives us different perception, but the game was not out of reach for the Argentinians till the last minutes. Right after the USA's run in the 1st quarter up to 21-4, they were leading at most by 21 points and as low as 6 points. Also keep in mind, that Manu played only 6 minutes.
In this segment I will try to dissect this game - I will split it into time frames and will give you a look at the performance of different lineups - using Play-by-play data.
1. TIME FRAME: 1Q 10:00 - 1Q 5:29
USA: Kidd, Bryant, Lebron, Anthony and Howard
ARG: Prigioni, Delfino, Ginobili, Scola, Oberto
Code: |
TEAM POSS MIN PTS EFFIC eFG
USA 9 2,17 7 77,8 33%
ARG 9 2,35 4 44,4 33%
SHOT ATTEMPTS
TEAM ALL FT FB INS OUT 3PT
USA 10 10% 0% 30% 20% 40%
ARG 6 0% 0% 67% 0% 33%
TEAM REB% TO% AST% BLK% STL%
USA 104% 11% 0% 11% 0%
ARG 96% 33% 0% 0% 11%
|
First of all some of the abreviations:
POSS - number of posssesions
MIN - minutes 'on offense', so with the ball for particular team
PTS - points
EFFIC - PTS / POSS, so Offensive Efficiency
SHOT ATTEMPTS:
FT - free throw attempts as possesions number, that means 3 free throws in one possesion is 1 FT Shot Attempt
FB - fast break attempts
INS - inside the paint attempts
OUT - outside the paint attempts
REB% is a sum of OFF and DEF REB %
AST% - % of assisted FG's
As for the other pct (To, Blk, Stl) - ratio of number of particular actions to possesions
As for this period - very low efficiency for both teams. USA has 4 more attempts to score but are not efficent - and that's mainly because 60% of their shots comes from outside. Argentina has more good inside attempts, but the presence of Dwight Howard is already felt - one block. Argentina has already 3 turnovers but no steal and fastbreak attempt for USA.
As for players, Delfino and Ginobili already 1-4 FG, Scola active with 4 rebounds, 2 points although already blocked by Howard.
In USA great parity as everyone, even J. Kidd has 2 shot attempts, also 3 rebounds by D. Howard
2. TIME FRAME: 1Q 5:29 - 1Q 1:55
USA: Paul, Wade, Bryant, Lebron, Bosh
ARG: Prigioni, Delfino, Ginobili (Nocioni), Scola, Oberto
Code: |
TEAM POSS MIN PTS EFFIC eFG
USA 8 1,15 14 175,0 150%

Big run by USA Team: 14 -0 and the result is 21-4.
Very fast USA team with Paul for Kidd, Bosh for Howard and Wade for Anthony. Their average possesion lasts 8,5 sec, they have 3 steals and 2 succesful fastbreak attempts. Also 2-3 for 3 points, so this is great display of their offensive abilities. Argentina misses all 5 shot attempts, although 3 of them (Scola and Oberto) are from inside, so US is not missing Howard that much. Especially Oberto is pathethic with 3 turnovers so far.
Kobe with 7 points (3-4), Paul with 5 points (2-2), both with one steal and fastbreak points, so great pressure from them.
Ginobili is injured, still USA scored 11 straight points before it happened and 7 after. Nocioni comes in for Ginobili.
3. TIME FRAME: 1Q 1:55 - 2Q 8:07
A lot of different lineups for USA. First D. Williams comes for Kobe, then Anthony for LeBron (so D. Williams, Paul, Wade, Anthony and Bosh).
Oh, this is not a good defensive lineup - as evidenced by great ARG efficiency.
Then Kobe returns for Wade and at the end Howard checks in for Bosh.
Argentina plays with the same lineup.
After this period USA leads 34-18.

Oh, I haven't seen this watching the game live, but in this time zone both teams played exceptionally well on offense. Argentina stays with USA, especially with two additional possesions (end of the quarter and start of the next one).
USA are 5-7 from FG's (with Paul 2-2 but D. Williams 1-3). Argentina is 4-5 from FG's and 5-5 from FT's with Nocioni scoring 6 points. More than 50% of shots form the outside of the paint for both teams, but they are feeling it.
4. TIME FRAME: 2Q 8:07 - 2Q 4:11
There are first substitutions for Argentina (aside from Nocioni for injured Ginobili):
ARG: Prigioni, Quinteros, Nocioni, L.M. Gutierrez, J.P. Gutierrez
USA: D. Williams (Kidd), Bryant, Anthony, James, Howard
Code: |

The score after this period: 39-29 for USA.
Very bad period for USA, they shoot a lot of threes (1-5), every possesion lasts nearly till the end and they don't work for good inside postion. Anthony 1-4 and Bryant 0-2 from FG. Kidd comes in for D. Williams but it doesn't change USA offensive philosophy.
Lots of changes in the Argentinians team, especially in the frontcourt, and it gives them boost. USA fouls a lot too, as in the earlier time frame, and ARG scores easy points from the free throw line (6-6). Also this is the first time frame ARG has advantage on the boards.
5. TIME FRAME: 2Q 4:11 - 2Q 2:49
ARG: Quinteros, Delfino, Nocioni, L.M. Gutierrez, J.P. Gutierrez
USA: Paul, Redd, Bryant, Anthony, Bosh
Score: 43-31 for USA

A short time frame, but there are some changes in the USA lineup and in the next frame Scola checks in and will have big influence, so I wanted to split it.
Delfino is back, but misses two FG's. USA still shoots for 3, but Bryant scores 1-2, and Anthony is 2-2 from FT's and has one block and one steal.

Another very bad period for USA, they have only 4 shot attempts to 8 for ARG, and also keep in mind, that at the end of period Anthony was (or was he?) fouled and made 3 free throws.
All in all US scores 5 points from free throws and is 0-2 for 3 pts. Take a look at their 2nd quarter performance - they are taking a lot of shots from the outside and aside from the short 5th time frame they can't find the basket. They also have problems on the boards since J.P. Gutierrez is on the floor.
For Argentina - Delfino misses another two 3-pt attempts, but Scola is 3-4 from inside the paint and scores altogether 7 points.
Bosh is replaced by Prince and it's really weird, as US plays with very small lineup and Scola gets another 4 points and one offensive rebound afer 2-and-1 against Bosh. Yes, Howard and Bosh have two fouls but Boozer waits for his chance.
Check back for the next post - dissecting the 2nd half of the game.

|
1st half was a story of two quarters. Fantastic offensive game in the first 12 minutes by Americans - forced turnovers, rebounding advantage -
it gave USA more shot attempts and they were very efficient even from the outside. It helped also, that Argentinians couldn't score even
though they were shooting a lot from the paint area.
But you live and die with 3-pt shots and in the last 8 minutes of the half USA were very cold from the distance - when you take into account,
that:
- they were attempting 60% shots from 3-pt land and couldn't find the net
- and also lost on the boards, which gave ARG more opportunities to shoot
- L. Scola established himself in the post - thanks also to Coach K's decision to leave Bosh, Howard and Boozer together on the bench
for the last minutes of the half than it's not a surprise that ARG were losing by only 6 points before the last possesion, when Anthony was fouled attempting a 3-pt shot.
We start 2nd half of the USA-ARG semifinal with 49-40 USA lead and both coaches return to the starting lineups.
7.TIME FRAME: 3Q 10:00 - 3Q 6:10

I've added here also TS as a measure of shooting efficiency (not only from the field but also from the free throw line):
TS = Points / Shot Attempts
So USA is back to the starting 5 and plays with a purpose - to dominate inside. 70% of shots are from the paint and also 80% of ARG shots are
from the outside. Still ARG is shooting efficent, but they are losing the boards game (3 offensive rebounds - 2 for Howard) and have one
turnover, which gives USA more shot opportunities.
Howard has 7 points and 3 boards with 3-3 FG, Kidd with 4 assists and 1 offensive rebound, LeBron with 5 points on 2-3 FG. But Anthony is 1-4
on FG's and Bryant is not visible on the offensive end - but on the other side he checks Delfino, who didn't attempt any shot in this span.
Also Scola is dominated by Howard and has 0 rebounds.
8.TIME FRAME: 3Q 6:10 - 3Q 3:13

Both teams very efficent as ARG looks more for inside game with Howard on the bench and USA getting a lot of free shots - after technical foul
by Nocioni, Anthony made 4 free throws.
USA with big advantage on the boards - 4 offensive rebounds (3 by D. Wade). Wade was very active scoring 3 points (1-3 FG, 1-2 FT). But
they've also had 3 turnovers - 2 by Kidd - so no more shooting opporunities for USA.
Scola 3-3 on FG's with 6 points and block on Kobe, but 0 rebounds.

Not a good USA lineup on the floor. ARG plays faster - thanks also to 3 USA turnovers - 2 by D. Williams.
USA can't score anything from the floor, although only Anthony has any attempts (0-2 FG). But they are fouled many times and score 5-8 FT.
Still they have 3 less shooting opportunities due to turnovers, but ARG is not taking advantage of it, cause they are not that efficent too.
Delfino is very active with 8 points (3-6 FG's), but all the team shoots to many times from the 3-pt line (2-6).
10.TIME FRAME: 4Q 10:00 - 4Q 5:39

USA returns to the starting 5, and ARG takes different approach - with smaller lineup based more on shooters to spread the floor.
Very even efficiency from both teams, the same inside - outside combination of shots, the same rebounding .
Lebron with 8 points on 3-4 FG's, Kidd with 3 assists, but Bryant with 0-2 FG's.
Quinteros with 5 points on 2-2 shooting.
Also close matchup between Howard and Scola. Howard is 1-2 on FG's with 2 rebounds, 1 turnover and 1 block, Scola also has 2 points (1-3 FG),
3 rebounds and 1 block.

Some changes in USA lineup as Bosh checks in for Howard and in the middle of this time frame Paul comes in for Kidd and Wade for Anthony.
Still both teams play with nearly the same style as in earlier time frame - the same efficiency, turnover and rebounding ratio. ARG shoots
more from outside, whereas USA from inside.
Bosh very active with 4 points (1-2 FG) and 2 rebounds, but Scola also has 4 points on 2-2 FG's.
12.TIME FRAME: 4Q 3:28 - 4Q 0:00

A lot of different lineups as both coaches put on floor low-used players: Porta-Pernigotti for ARG and Prince, Redd and Boozer for USA.
Not too much to talk about. Only Wade - with 5 points on 2-3 FG.
In the next post I will try to summarize the game.

As I already did with the semifinal game against Argentina, I will try also to break down the final game of the tournament: USA vs Spain. I will split it into even more time frames, as this game was very contested and there were more changes of lineups. At the end I will post final +/- raw data.
If I will have some time I will try to run some additional analysis for adjusted +/- data - but we will see as naturally I'm very interested in it, but have also a lot of time constraints.
1. TIME FRAME: 1Q 10:00 - 1Q 6:30

Oh, take a look at this incredible Spain offensive efficiency, take a look also at their shot selection - there is everything, some fast breaks, some free throws, some inside and not that much outside shots. Also 3/4 of FG's are assisted. GREAT performance.
USA is not playing that badly naturally - at least on offense, but 2/3 of their shots came from outside. At least everybody is involed on offense, but Bryant and LeBron pick already 2 fouls.
For ESP Jimenez has already 5 points and 1 assist, Navarro and Gasol with 3 points.
2. TIME FRAME: 1Q 6:30 - 1Q 5:03

No changes there with Spain's efficiency. Due to fouls Kobe and LeBron are sitting on the bench and an interesting lineup with Kidd and D. Williams is on the floor, but after 2 possesions C. Paul comes in.
3 possesions and 3 inside scores for Spain for Gasol, Navarro and Rubio.
Wade is already seen on the court with 5 points, Paul with 2+1 action.
It was a short time frame, but I wanted to exclude it as on the next stop there are finally some changes in Spain's roster.

Another short time period, but first of all there are some changes in Spain's team and it's seen in their efficiency - as they have 2 offensive rebounds but can't convert additional chances into points - although it's Pau Gasol with 0-2 and Navarro with 1 point on 2 FG chances. Also in the next frame we can look at Pau Gasol's substitution.
For USA Chris Paul with another 2+1 action.

And what will you tell me about this interesting lineup? They are going inside - finally they have some fastbreaks with D.Wade 2 steals on Lopez and Mumbru.
D. Wade is fantastic in this period with 8 points on 2-2 FG and 3-4 FT. And Prince - playing a lot in this 1st quarter has 4 points scored inside.
For Spain Marc Gasol has 4 points on 2-3 and Garbajosa 3 points, but they have big issues with interior defense.
Look at last 2 time frames - first changes in the SPA lineup and they are playing worse - especially on defense as on offense their first half mark was off the chart.

USA is back to the starting lineup and Spain with two changes: Marc Gasol for Reyes and Rudy Fernandez for Navarro. And Spain is rebounding better with M.Gasol's 2 boards (also 2 turnovers), but they are inefficient - Pau Gasol with 0-1 FG and 0-2 FT.
This USA lineup plays on offense as in earlier stint - 2/3 of the shots come from outside. Bryant with 5 points, assist and 2 boards. D. Howard? 0 FG, 1 boards and unsportsmanlike foul.
6. TIME FRAME: 2Q 6:40 - 2Q 3:11

Finally we have a chance to look at the great lineup with Bryant, LeBron and Wade on the floor together. So we see steals (Paul and Wade), fastbreaks, Wade and LeBron with 5 points.
Spain plays also well as they have a lot of shots from inside the paint - Rudy Fernandez with 5 points and Gasol with Reyes score from the paint area.

USA: Paul, D. Williams, Wade, Prince, Bosh

LeBron and Bryant back on the bench as they have to play in the 2nd half - they already had 2 fouls in the 1st quarter. This lineup is having problems putting the ball in the basket - in halfcourt play they go for 3 and are 1 on 4. But they hustle - 2 offensive rebounds by T. Prince - and also are fouled many times - C. Paul 3-4 on FT.
Spain is playing without Pau, but Rudy Fernandez scores another 5 points and Reyes is 2-2 from inside.
Chceck back for lineups crunching from the 2nd half of the game.

Sorry to chime in so late here; but am I the only one for whom the columns are scrambled? I honestly can't see the data.
Maybe go back and reduce the column separation to 3 or 4 spaces? _________________ `

Mike,
take a look at the first post - I've reduced the spaces so maybe it works?
If not I will post some data f.ex. on Google spreadsheet. |
