APBR has migrated from a Yahoo group to a new discussion board. To become an APBR member, register at the new board at apbr.org/forum.

All APBRmetrics participants are invited to check out the APBR board and register if interested.

Thanks

Ray LeBov
APBR Executive Director

It's time to post a bit of an update on the general progress of APBR:

    * The new APBR discussion site at http://www.apbr.org/forum/ is up and running. It is subdivided into categories for people to post things on. It is often non-statistical but welcomes stat input when appropriate. We are really hoping to have a good count of members, so if you want to be considered an APBR member, simply register as a user over there. That gives us more momentum in building the non-profit organization, having formal meetings, and generally getting the activities of the group into the mainstream.
    * There is now a possibility of an APBR meeting in San Diego in October. There is, of course, the New England Symposium on Sports Statistics in Boston on 9/29 that will serve to bring some of us together, especially those on the statistical side. We may be piggy backing on events like this until membership is larger.
    * There can be support for formal APBR projects if people want to put together proposals.
    * It has been commented that there isn't a lot of historical statistical research being done. We are using history to look at the present and future, but there hasn't been a lot to try to understand some of the teams of the past. MikeG has done a lot with overall player rating, there are occasional statistical looks at lists (luckiest NBA champs, e.g.), and Justin's site provides a lot of data, but there is something of a gap to explain some aspects of history. I just want to remind people that historical stat research is an area that is fertile. This drives the baseball fans in many ways, but is reasonable here as well. I personally cannot comment on a lot of contemporary issues, but can comment on the past and enjoy it when something spawns our discussions of past players. Here's an example on my mind: Trace the history of the 1970's Blazers. What statistical characteristics did they have as they pulled out a Finals victory, as well as before and after Walton? (My god, it sounds like a question on a college test.)

We're making headway with the organization. Ray Lebov is actively whipping some of us into shape. We have over 200 members right now. We have some recruiting going on (this is serving as a form of it!). The offseason for the NBA has been active in the news (for good and bad), with more and more references to people associated with APBR and APBRMetrics (usually for good). I bet Dan R. got his job in the White House just because of that line on his resume Wink

Sign up. You can put it on your resume.

You can see my latest list of 600 greatest careers (1952-2007) here:

http://www.apbr.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=25

Also, alltime Knicks, Celtics, Lakers, and so on. You may vote for greatest player from each franchise. To vote, you have to sign up.

If you sign up, consider using your real name, or some part of it. Or not.
