Since we were talking about the draft 82 games did something to measure how big a NBA player truly plays.

http://www.82games.com/trueheight.htm

Gay and Thomas have almost the exact same measurements but Thomas plays much bigger. Thats interesting.

It would be nice to see more of the detail on the method. If the author visits here or if anyone knows him maybe he could share more here.

Standing reach and jumping reach both important. Standing reach maybe more than many folks think on defense and even rebounding.

I emailed him asking about his method and sent him some measurements from players over the last 5 years. I be interested to seeing some current players.

A little more methodology would be nice. But yeah, I have to agree, I've seen Tyrus play in college and he plays big. Your hypothesis is a fair one, that reach and leaping ability is more important than height, but also a combination of the 3. I guess this explains why tiny Bill Russell blocked about a millions shots a game at while Yao (the alligator) Ming blocks less than two. I would like to see these numbers for current NBA players. I think guys like Gerald Wallace, Zo, and Shawn Marion would also rank pretty high.

Yeah, this kind of bothered me.

Rudy Gay: 6'8 (in shoes), 7'3 wingspan, 8'11.2" standing reach, 33" no-step vert, 40.5" max vert

Tyrus Thomas: 6'8.25" (in shoes), 7'3 wingspan, 9' standing reach, 34" no-step vert, 39.5" max vert

Rudy Gay measured out with a +0.07 difference and Tyrus Thomas with a +3.32 difference.

To me, that makes no sense whatsoever. There's a 1" difference in their standing reach and their no-step verts (Gay's max vert is better) and Thomas is slightly taller. That shouldn't translate into three and a third inches of difference in their True Height Index unless the weighting system is so heavy that minor differences like that turn into radical ones.

Thats true. Thats why his methodology would be interesting. Gay doesn't play nearly as big as Thomas does when watching the games. I was actually surprised to see Gay measurements so close to Thomas. If the little difference equals that much difference he might really have something.

It'll be interesting to see, for sure. I really would love to get a look at his formula but I question this: if Gay hadn't been playing so much on the wing or in the backcourt as he occasionally played, would his True Height Index be higher?

I mean, OF COURSE Thomas plays taller, because he was by design a PF while Rudy was a SF.

I think it would be more since Thomas plays bigger it allows him to play PF. During the year the throught process was that Thomas was playing so well because he had a growth spirt. That he had all of sudden grown to 6'10. I had one argument with a guy who was saying he was bigger than LaMarcus Aldridge now and was equal size to Dwight Howard in height. Him measuring 6'7 not only meant all that was untrue. That he was the same size that he was when he came to LSU. Those individuals though so how big Thomas plays. Gay to me has never looked like he was playing bigger than his 6'8 height.
