Does anyone have a Game-by-Game Box Score/Summary of this series?

This is what I have compiled, using espndb.com.

Quote:
Game 1 - Celtics 122, Lakers 108

The Celtics were tired after a seven-game series against the Philadelphia Warriors was decided on a game-winning shot by Sam Jones. Less than 48 hours later, Jones came through with 24 points in Game 1.

K.C. Jones showed heart and determination. He suffered a broken nose after being hit by an elbow from Jim Krebs in a violent collision. K.C. Jones remained in the game, a move which inspired his teammates.

Elgin Baylor led the Lakers with 35 points. He flew in from leave from Fort Lewis, Washington, where he was serving as a private. Jerry West added 21 points.

The Lakers evened the series by hanging on as the Celtics rallied from a 90-66 deficit to close to within four points (102-98).

Jerry West scored 40 points while Elgin Baylor added 36.

Tommy Heinsohn led Boston with 27 points, while Bob Cousy and Bill Russell each scored 23.

Game 3 - Lakers 117, Celtics 115

A record crowd of 15,180 packed the Los Angeles Sports Arena and they saw a barn burner. Jerry West was the hero down the stretch. In the closing seconds, West scored to tie the game at 115 apiece. Then Sam Jones tried to inbound the ball to Bob Cousy with four seconds remaining. West stole the ball and drove for the winning layup at the buzzer.

Celtics coach Red Auerbach questioned the timing, saying West could not dribble to the basket and score that quickly. The final play was not overturned.

Elgin Baylor scored 39 points while West finished with 36.

Bill Russell led the Celtics with 26 points.

When the NBA compilied its list of the 60 Greatest Playoff Moments to coincide with the league's 60th anniversary, West's steal and layup ranked No. 29 on the list.

Game 4 - Celtics 115, Lakers 103

Boston did not want to go home down 3-1, and it showed early. The Celtics raced out to an early 29-16 lead. Boston led by nine at half (60-51).

The Celtics built up a 17-point lead at 105-88 and were never threatened.

Bill Russell led a balanced attack with 21 points and 22 rebounds. Tommy Heinsohn scored 19 points as Boston had six players in double figures.

The Lakers were again led by the duo of Elgin Baylor (38) and Jerry West (26).

Game 5 - Lakers 126, Celtics 121

Elgin Baylor set the NBA Finals single-game scoring record with 61 points, a mark that still stands. It was the greatest scoring performance at Boston until Michael Jordan scored 63 in a playoff game in 1986.

That performance broke Wilt Chamberlain's prior playoff mark of 56 points.

Baylor hit 22 of 40 shots from the field in the win.

Tommy Heinsohn scored 30 points while Bill Russell tallied 26 points and 29 rebounds. They were both overshadowed by Baylor's brilliance.

When the NBA compilied its list of the 60 Greatest Playoff Moments to coincide with the league's 60th anniversary, Baylor's performance ranked No. 15 on the list.

Game 6 - Celtics 119, Lakers 105

Facing elimination, Sam Jones took charge, firing up 27 shots from the floor, making 17. Jones' 35 points were the game-high, even more than Elgin Baylor or Jerry West (34 each).

Bill Russell dominated the boards with 24 rebounds.

Boston took over the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers 34-16 in that crucial period.

Game 7 - Celtics 110, Lakers 107 (OT)

The Celtics won their fourth straight championship, but it was not easy. The stars really shined. Bill Russell grabbed 44 rebounds, scored 30 points. Elgin Baylor scored 41 points. Jerry West added 35 points.

Boston struggled with foul trouble as Tommy Heinsohn, Satch Sanders and Jim Loscutoff were all disqualified. The Celtics led 100-96 with 44 seconds left. The Lakers rallied to tie the score at 100.

Then it came down to Frank Selvy of the Lakers. With three seconds left, he missed an open 12-foot shot from the baseline that would have won the game. Instead, the game went into overtime -- and Sam Jones scored five of Boston's 10 points in the extra period. Jones finished with 27 points as the Celtics won the game and the series.

When the NBA compilied its list of the 60 Greatest Playoff Moments to coincide with the league's 60th anniversary, this game was ranked No. 12 on the list.

NBA.com's writeup of the finals adds a couple numbers. Baylor had 22 rebounds to go along with the 61 points in Game 5. They've got Russell with 40 rebounds in Game 7.

eagle - Thank you,

I am using an excerpt of Tall Tales: The Glory Years of the NBA (pg. 247), by Terry Pluto, to fill in other blanks.

Quote:
Game 7 was in Boston. At this point, no one was sure what – if anything – the homecourt was worth. Boston was 1-2 at home, and so was L.A.

The seventh game started close and stayed that way. The Celtics were ahead 53-47 at the half, but glad to be in front as Sam Jones was 1-of-10 from the field. In the first half, Baylor and West combined for 41 of the Lakers' 47 points.

The third period ended at 75-75. In the fourth quarter, foul trouble struck Boston. Satch Sanders fouled out, then Loscutoff, both picking up most of their fouls trying to stay with Baylor. With 4:40 left in the game, Tom Heinsohn went to the bench with his sixth foul on Baylor's 37th and 38th points. Heinsohn had a miserable game with eight points, six fouls and 3-of-13 shooting.

Auerbach needed someone to attempt to shadow Baylor. He went with Braun, a 6-foot-5 guard by trade. Braun had been in the league for 13 years, and Auerbach figured that his experience and the fact that the officials knew him would keep Braun away from cheap fouls.

It turned out to be the key move: Baylor would only score three points in the last four minutes.

With 40 seconds left, Boston had a 100-96 lead, but Selvy drove 94 feet and scored, cutting it to 100-98.

Boston brought the ball in-bounds, but West pilfered a Cousy pass. West found Selvy open, and he scored again.

That made it 100-100 with 18 seconds left.

Boston worked the ball to Frank Ramsey, who cut loose with a running hook that banged off the rim and was collared by Rudy LaRusso.

With five seconds left and the score 100-100, the Lakers had the ball and the ballgame in their hands. In the Boston huddle, Auerbach patted Braun on the back and told him to take it easy - Russell would now take care of Baylor.

Schaus wanted to get the ball to West or Baylor – which didn't exactly surprise anyone, especially the Celtics. Boston blanketed the two stars, leaving Selvy wide open on the baseline, about 10 feet from the basket. He got the ball, took the shot, and it skidded off the rim. The rebound was snared by Russell as the buzzer sounded. Even through there was still a five-minute overtime period to be played, Boston could feel the confidence seep out of the Lakers, and the Celtics put them away, 110-107.

Russell would not let the Celtics lose. He played all 53 minutes, scoring 30 and hauling in 40 rebounds. The battered Krebs and Felix combined for 10 points and 14 boards.

After his 1-for-10 start, Sam Jones was 11-for-21 in the second half and finished with 27 points. Cousy had an awful time, scoring eight and shooting 3-for-13 from the field and 2-for-10 from the foul line. Yes, he only made two out of 10 free throws.

Baylor scored 41 for the Lakers, but shot only 13-of-40. He also had 22 rebounds. Like Russell, West played all 53 minutes, scoring 35 on 14-of-30 shooting.

And Selvy? The two field goals he scored in the final minute of regulation were his only two of the game, as he was 2-of-10 for 10 points in 49 minutes.

The Celtics and Lakers would meet again in the finals – in 1963, 1965, 1966 and 1969 – but the Lakers would never come as close to an NBA title as the day of Selvy's shot. As the years and the Finals frustrations mounted, Selvy's shot would assume an even more tragic place in Lakers history than it originally had on April 18, 1962. West would be especially haunted by it. He would not win an NBA title until 1972, when the Lakers defeated New York in five games. That would be his only championship as a player, and he'd retire knowing that he never beat Boston in the Finals, a thought that gnaws away at him to this day.

keptic,
You've brought to my attention that I don't have the '62 Finals, either game-by-game or composite. After all these years; apparently, I'd never looked them up.

I do have everything from 1970 onward; and in spreadsheets, composite only. Before that, stats are spotty. As late as 1969, the only Finals stats that seem to be regularly kept (separate from playoff totals) are FG, FT, FTA, and Pts.

What are you doing with these?

This site has Finals boxscores back to 1966:

http://webuns.chez-alice.fr/home.htm

We'll be adding a lot of old boxscores in the next year as well, although I'm not sure how far back they go.

Did you try the regular APBR message boards? Someone over there might be of more help.
