Figured this could be a fun exercise. Can't share the graphical software, but can share some of its byproducts. Will post answers later... Best guesser wins a cookie? The pictures are listed by degree of difficulty (for me, at least)

Shooter #1!

Shooter #2!

Shooter #3!

Shooter #4!

Shooter #5!

Very cool, it's great how color is used to add a crucial 3rd dimension of useful information.

What do the total numbers for each chart represent?

#1: Low volume guy that shoots a lot from the corner? Bruce Bowen?

#2: someone that shoots from everywhere and seems to shoot it all well? Kobe Bryant?

#3: kinda like the previous, but doesn't shoot from the outside as well? LeBron James?

#4: basically shoots nothing from outside... similar to #5 but enjoys the paint more?

I'd go with someone like KG for #4 and maybe say someone like Duncan for #5? Trying to pin the guy that has a high volume mid-range without 3pters is tough (esp the lack of paint stuff in #5)...

#1: Bruce Bowen -- corners
#2: Steve Nash? -- the hardest one. Who's good from everywhere except mid-paint?
#3: Carmelo Anthony -- doesn't finish well enough to be LeBron
#4: Zydrunas Ilgauskas -- all straight on
#5: Kevin Garnett -- midrange without threes.

For the sake of the exercise, I'll guess players who haven't yet been mentioned.

1. Vladimir Radmanovic?
2.
3. Dwyane Wade?
4.
5. Big Baby?

This is awesome, I can't get what the total is of as well, but perhaps that is so we can't look up the players Smile
1. Shane Battier
2. Ray Allen
3. Kobe Bryant
4. I have no Idea, but is definitely a C/PF who shoots from the high post - Yao?
5. I like Garnett Here, except surely he shoots short jumpers too, so has to be someone who only shoots uncontested midrange jumpers - Tony Battie?

Keep the guesses coming. Heading out and can only post for a sec, but #1 is Bruce Bowen - I think that one is pretty obvious Wink Pretty awesome shot chart for him too. No one has guessed 2 through 5 correctly yet, though.

Bowen went all year without hitting a straight-on shot. Wow.
One year, his 3FG% was higher than his 2FG%, which was higher than his FT%. Anyone else ever done that?

#2 Q Rich
#3 Mehmet
#4 Boozer
#5 Biedrins

Take 2:
2. Kapono
3.AI - I am wondering if intensity of color is supposed to represent the (relative) proportions of shots from that area too?
4. No idea
5. David West

I think the hue (blue-to-yellow-to red) is percentage and the intensity (pale-to-darker) is frequency.

Exactly, this. The #of shots should help eliminate some guesses. As said, #1 is Bowen. It is amazing he's mastered the corner 3 but basically has absolutely no offensive value aside from this.

Some hints...
#2: A friend describes this player as "wearing a dog collar, anytime he gets near the paint he gets zapped". We think he's overrated.
#3: Thinks he's a guard
#4: Probably ran incredibly well on 2pt jumpshots; would not expect a repeat performance this next year.
#5: Knows he's not a guard and yet shoots better than most.

good breakdown, and you're on the right track. i think the players you mentioned are basically the wealthy-version, or put another way, the players shot charts are the poor mans Yao (well, poor poor!) and poor man's KG.
