The bank shot has pretty much disappeared from NBA games. Duncan, who just yesterday made 5 bank shots against the Knicks, might become the last one to master this old school technique.

Is there any hope for a comeback of the bank shot? Let's see some stats from last season, taken from b-v PbPs

Code:

Player     FGM  FGA   FG%
Duncan     100  171   58.5%
Okafor      51   76   67.1%
Bryant      35   40   87.5%
Stoudemire  27   40   67.5%
Tinsley     25   28   89.3%
L. James    25   39   64.1%
Ginobili    25   39   64.1%
Wade        21   35   60.0%
J. Green    20   24   83.3%
Lewis       19   28   67.9%
Paul        18   22   81.8%
B. Davis    18   26   69.2%
A. Miller   17   20   85.0%
R. Wallace  17   30   56.7%
Nowitzki    16   18   88.9%
   Total   1750 2440   71.7%

Duncan is the most frequent bank shooter by far, no surprises there, but his signature move isn't particularly efficient. Tinsley, given his minutes, provides the best combination of volume and accuracy in this kind of shot.

In total, there's roughly two bank shot attempts per game, and they are made at a pretty good rate (if PbP data is to be trusted).

Other notables out of the Top 15 are Garnett (16/21), Howard (16/33). A. Daniels (13/13), Nash (8/14), Anthony (7/9), Iverson (7/10), Kevin Martin (3/4), Pierce (2/3) and Yao (1/2).

What kind of range are we talking about here?

Back in the day I was pretty good with a turnaround 15-20 foot wing bank shot.

How does this fit in with shot location? Anyone banking in a lot of long ones?

Tinsley 25-28 on bank shots? He hit 42% of his 2FG, so I'm guessing most of those bankers were layups.

I suspect the high percentages are due partly to selectivity in shooting bank shots. A guy like Kobe might only attempt them when he's in a comfortable position on offense, whereas Duncan may try to use them more frequently in more challenging defensive situations.

I just searched for "Bank shot" in play-by-plays, I have no shot location data. All I can do is separate bank shots based on how they are labeled

Code:

Jump       932/1435 64.9%
Other      818/1005 81.4%
 Running    373/469 79.5%
 Turnaround 202/247 81.8%
 Hook         61/77 79.2%
 Fade away    63/74 85.1%
 Driving      61/73 83.5%
 Pullup       58/65 89.2%

Tinsley was 11/13 on jump bank shots, 7/7 on running, 5/6 on turnaround and 2/2 on pullup bank shots. He also hit them quite well in 2006/2007.

Makes one wonder why he doesn't shoot everything off the glass.

The other thing to consider is that the pbp may not record every instance of a bank shot. Or, a scorer may be more likely to classify a shot as "bank shot" when it goes in. Or vice versa. A bricked bank shot may simply be classified as a miss. A bad miss that was not intended as a bank shot could could conceivably be classified as a missed bank shot. It would be helpful to learn how scorers decide to classify shots.

A good idea for a study, but as Kevin notes the PBP's cannot be easily trusted on something like this.

The classifications are way too inconsistent and skewed.

I'm at work so I threw this together quick, but based on basketballgeek.com's data I put together a 3d graph of all shots listed with bank and their position in a 3d graph.

If I get time I'll play with this to allow individual players and whatenot.

The red line is the midcourt...

Use 's' to zoom in and 't' to zoom out. Clicking and dragging rotates the model.

Thanks, that's my brothers work. I thought they were pretty neat too.

I just added a new 3d chart with makes and misses separated.

Press 1 for makes and 2 for misses...

EDIT:

I ran a quick query for Duncan and FG% on shots listed as banks...

FG% = 0.53448275862069 Makes: 124 Total: 232

And here's the league average...

FG% = 0.65144927536232 Makes: 1798 Total: 2760
