I know most people here aren't located in Boston, but any of you who are may be interested in the opportunity described below. This internship (or an earlier, less fleshed-out version of it) is how I got my start with the team. So there's definitely some good potential opportunity here, not to mention the fact that it's just a cool job (even if it's unpaid).

Basketball Statistics Intern for 2008-09 Season
Undergrad/Graduate Internship Opening
Design and execute statistical analyses for NBA team. Gather and format data, assist in determining approach, execute analysis, and interpret and communicate results. This is the perfect opportunity for a basketball fan who is also an emerging expert in quantitative analysis.
Requirements include:
* College upperclassman or grad student majoring in Statistics, Economics (with focus on Econometrics), or other major with focus on quantitative analysis. Graduate students with any similar background also welcome, but must have track record in executing successful statistical analyses, whether in or out of school.
* Excellent basketball knowledge.
Responsibilities include:
* Compiling and converting data into format for use in statistical analyses
* Determining approach and executing analyses to inform team decisionmaking at both the coaching level and the GM level (everything from evaluating specific players to general basketball statistics research)
* Developing statistical models using regression and data mining techniques, etc., using a statistical package such as R, Minitab, Stata, etc.
Candidates must have completed significant statistics or econometric coursework. Experience developing statistical models outside of school a differentiator but not required. Creative thinking a must. Exact hours flexible/negotiable but expect a significant workload.
To qualify for an internship position with the Boston Celtics, all participants must be enrolled in a degree program, undergraduate (Junior or Senior year only) or graduate. Each candidate must be eligible to receive course credit toward their degree for the successful completion of the internship. We are willing to work with your professors to determine if credit can be made available. All internships are non-compensated.
