Since Shaq got traded to the Suns, how does the NBA ruling to replay the final overtime of the Hawks/Heat game apply? The whole ruling was over Shaq having 5 fouls instead of 6? Does anyone know what the NBA will do now that the player who was the main person involved in the ruling has been traded? Will he have to return to play in the game?

They still play the game, but any players traded away since (i.e. Shaq) are unavailable, and any players acquired since then (Marion) are also ineligible.

Actually they're still trying to figure it out. Last time I talked to the Hawks they had a call into the league about it. And the obvious follow-up -- If you allow Marion to play, how many fouls does he have? Does somebody inherit Shaq's five?

On a related topic, why does this get replayed when the Toronto game was not? Is it because the Raptors didn't protest?

My thought on the outcome would be along the lines of the NBA basically looking at the current standings and knowing that the Miami Heat are so far out of the playoff hunt and seeing how the Atlanta Hawks are in the playoff picture it would make sense to give the Hawks the victory and update the standings to include the result. It seems to me that the very player that this whole protest centered around (Shaquille O'Neal) has been traded the Heat might as well just forget about it. I would expect the NBA at least to not decide until the very least late March, early April just incase the Atlanta Hawks fall out of the playoff picture.

I don't think players acquired since would be ineligible. A few years back, there was a guy who played for both teams in a single game because he got traded from one team to another between the original date and the replay.

I'm not 100 percent sure about this, but now since the game has been completed and logged away with the Hawks winning 114-111 in overtime, my curiousity got the best of me. Since the NBA approved that Shawn Marion, Marcus Banks and Mike Bibby were eligible to participate in this game and both Shawn Marion and Mike Bibby recorded 52 seconds of playing time according to the final box score this should be interesting. This game was originally back on December 19th. Now on December 19th Shawn Marion was a part of the Phoenix Suns and they played on that day against the Dallas Mavericks and lost 108-105. Shawn Marion posted 23 points and 10 rebounds in that game, but what is concerning me is how are they going to put that down in his game log for the 2007-08 season. According to the box scores Shawn Marion participated in 2 games on the same day for 2 different teams since they are going to include his stats from the Heat/Hawks game. His stat line against Dallas was...37:36 minutes played, 10-14 from the field, 3-4 from the free throw line, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 personal fouls, 3 steals, 0 turnovers and 0 blocked shots and 23 points. His stat line for the Hawks/Heat game that will be recorded to its original game date 12/19/07 is...00:52 seconds played, 1 rebound. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this interesting situation and how the NBA and the other sites will incorporate this on his stats.

I verified that the logs and boxscore that are on NBA.com have been revised for the original game (I redownloaded them as well). I didn't try to verify Marion's season total, but I'd expect he'd get credit for all the stats, including a game played, in both games. In theory he could play 83 games this season, has anyone looked at the schedule to see how many he'd play in if he played in all remaining MIA games?

I imagine that because of the schedule, he might not be the first player to play in more than 82 regular season games, as a well timed trade could get a player into an extra game or two. Anyone know how often that's actually occured?

Thanks,
Aaron

Actually Randy Smith holds the record for most regular season games played by a single player in a single season. He played 85 games and that was for 2 teams. I think Shawn Marion did get credit for a game played as well did Mike Bibby. I'm pretty sure that NBA.com and all other NBA stats sites will have the reasoning for the 2 games in his bio.

Re: Most games played in a regular season:

Walt Bellamy played a record 88 regular season games in 1968-69. He played 35 for the Knicks pre-trade & 53 for the Pistons post-trade.

You are so right. I feel like a fool now. I was thinking of a totally different stat when I put down Randy Smith's name. Thank you for correcting my error. Next time I gotta pay more attention to the topic at hand and not what is on my mind.

There was a conversation about this like 6 months ago on the regular APBR boards. I think someone in the 70s played 84-85 games due to scheduling quirks.

-G-----year-----player (nba)
88 - 196869 - walt bellamy
87 - 197677 - tom henderson
86 - 197071 - mccoy mclemore
86 - 197576 - garfield heard
85 - 196768 - john tresvant
85 - 196869 - butch komives
85 - 197475 - nate williams
85 - 199900 - chris gatling
85 - 200304 - shareef abdur-rahim
85 - 200304 - theo ratliff
84 - occurred 10 times
83 - occurred 18 times

from 1969-70 to 1975-76, ABA teams played 84 games a season:

-G-----year-----player (aba)
90 - 197374 - chuck williams
88 - 197071 - charlie williams
87 - 197374 - johnny neumann
87 - 197576 - dave robisch
86 - occurred 5 times
85 - occurred zero times

I was thinking of a totally different stat when I put down Randy Smith's name.

you might be thinking of the consecutive games played in streak - smith played 10 straight seasons without missing a regular season game, and in 906 straight games over 12 seasons. he retired with the longest active streak, since surpassed by a.c. green (1,192 straight regular season games, from about the 4th game of his 2nd season until the end of his 16th season)...
