As far as I know, aggregate totals don't exist anywhere, at least updated on a regular basis. I've heard that Harvey Pollack's Statistical Yearbook has the totals, but that's published at the end of each year, I believe.
Luckily ESPN.com provides the totals on a game-by-game basis, so I decided to write up a script to total them all. Here's what I found (all data only through the end of February, meaning including games on Feb. 29th but nothing past that).
Code: | Team G PF PA PF/G PA/G Marg/G
GSW 56 1233 737 22.0 13.2 +8.9
PHI 58 1005 575 17.3 9.9 +7.4
PHX 58 1047 676 18.1 11.7 +6.4
DEN 56 1008 761 18.0 13.6 +4.4
ATL 55 879 723 16.0 13.1 +2.8
DET 58 685 564 11.8 9.7 +2.1
NOH 57 764 676 13.4 11.9 +1.5
BOS 56 595 512 10.6 9.1 +1.5
IND 59 777 700 13.2 11.9 +1.3
LAL 58 749 677 12.9 11.7 +1.2
SEA 57 865 795 15.2 13.9 +1.2
DAL 57 767 714 13.5 12.5 +0.9
NJN 57 714 677 12.5 11.9 +0.6
ORL 59 705 730 11.9 12.4 -0.4
LAC 55 468 501 8.5 9.1 -0.6
CLE 58 694 742 12.0 12.8 -0.8
SAC 58 675 745 11.6 12.8 -1.2
UTA 59 697 773 11.8 13.1 -1.3
CHA 57 688 777 12.1 13.6 -1.6
MEM 56 797 888 14.2 15.9 -1.6
WAS 57 588 688 10.3 12.1 -1.8
TOR 56 439 544 7.8 9.7 -1.9
SAS 56 515 631 9.2 11.3 -2.1
CHI 55 586 720 10.7 13.1 -2.4
NYK 56 494 634 8.8 11.3 -2.5
MIA 56 591 743 10.6 13.3 -2.7
MIL 58 574 799 9.9 13.8 -3.9
HOU 56 459 678 8.2 12.1 -3.9
POR 59 444 732 7.5 12.4 -4.9
MIN 57 463 853 8.1 15.0 -6.8
G = games in sample
PF = fast break points for
PA = fast break points against
Marg/G = (PA - PF) / G, fast break point margin per game |
The huge surprise to me is Philadelphia, which clocks in at 24th in overall pace according to Basketball-Reference.com and 23rd overall according to KnickerBlogger.net yet somehow is 4th overall in fast break points and 2nd overall in margin. |

Good question. I would add, what should be the criteria for designating a fast break attempt, and when a fast break is aborted? Is it more a matter of speed than matchup numerical advantage? |

I have never asked how the NBA guides its scorers on this (too many other things to think about). But I tend to look at things this way:
Fast break: Fewer than 5 players back and players not matched up defensively.
Secondary break: No fewer than 3 players back and defensive matchups not established.
There probably needs to be time cutoffs on these, but I've never found ones I particularly like. _________________ Dean Oliver

Thanks Ben.
Average is 12.3.
6 over 15 pts a game. 5 producing much above a 2 pt edge. Top 4 lead by quality veteran PG.
For most it is not providing "the answer". For a few it is a major problem. |
