All,

Just a quick note to let you know that Basketball-Reference.com is now being updated on a daily basis. More details are here.

Just as I was in the middle of grabbing data from it, actually. Any chance the old site still exists somewhere?

Great work, Justin. It turned out even better than I expected.

You're expectations must have been pretty low. :-)

What were you trying to get? Were you spidering the entire site? Google may have cached versions of the old pages.

No, I was going team by team for the 07 and 06 seasons, copying and pasting into Excel. Now the headings are all in a different order, so the data doesn't match up with what I've got already. No biggie. If you've got something, great. If not, I'll figure it out. Thanks for getting back to me.

You can get all of the basic stats for those two seasons here and here.

The daily updates are a welcome addition. I also like the "convert to PRE" option.

Sortable columns and current season stats are excellent additions. Thank you for your hard work.

I have a couple of questions. What would be the simplest way to see current season's PER leaders? I know I can see the top 5 at the bottom of this page but how to quickly see the rest of the list?

Also, I was wondering why the PER on B-R.com and Knickerblogger is slightly different. I mean at the time of this post Kobe has a PER of 24.8 at B-R.com but his PER is listed as 25.10 at Knickerblogger (both in 37 games). The other players' PER have this kind of small differences, too. So, I was wondering the reason for that.

Also, if possible, I think it'd be better if you could list the PER numbers in player pages with two digits after the decimal point instead of one, just like you do here. (i.e. 25.63 vs. 25.6). But maybe you don't want the columns get any more wider than that which is understandable.

Thanks again.

The top 20 can be found here.

I don't know, I've never looked into it.

I guess I don't see what an extra decimal place would add. I mean, PER is just an estimate of per minute productivity, so does it really matter if one player's PER is 24.36 and another's is 24.44 (they both round to 24.4).

I'll echo this. Just because we can go to a lot of decimal places doesn't mean we should. Using a lot of decimal places can mislead people into believing the accuracy of the data (not just PER, but FG%, OR%, etc.) more than anyone should. Reasonably, cutting PER off at 24, instead of 24.4, should be what we do.

I assume that when b-r.com sorts by a stat, they aren't limited to the decimal places shown, but to the actual calculation result?

The Player Stats Search will be back in a week or two.

The Box Scores Search is now the Player Game Log Finder and should be working.

The Player Comparison machine will be back at some point.

All,

I apologize that some of the old research tools aren't available right now. However, there were some dramatic changes made to the site under the hood. These changes caused the old research tools to break. I really wanted to get the in-season updates going, so I decided to reboot the site before re-writing all of the code. These things will return gradually, and I appreciate your patience.

Thank you Justin.

Just so you know, Hollinger's page has some different results, too. For example Kobe's PER is 24.95 compared to 24.8 at B-R.com. The same is true for Lebron (30.36 vs. 30.2) and the other players.
