Just curious to know how many teams actually employ stats guys. I think Portland, Seattle, Houston and Boston have something of the sort, but I can't say for sure.

Does anybody know? Is any work being done outside of what is being discussed on this forum?

The list includes Denver, Cleveland, Dallas and possibly Toronto. I guess San Antonio.

The stat work of teams of the list may range from rigorous examination of standard statistics to heavy use of advanced techniques or new questions.

Will Seattle be added again with new GM? Maybe there are some others depending on the standard.

I know that at least a few teams employ a stat consultant. (Oddly, the same guy.) I know of one team that was looking to establish a stats department at the beginning of last season, but I don't know how far they progressed with it.

Miami has a stats program, though I'm not sure how much they do with box score or +/- stuff. I know that they do tracking of various activities, and then analysis of the tracking -- stuff Riley did while in New York as well.

I don't know whether Phoenix makes extensive use of stats, but I suspect them of having a good stats program based on comments from players and coaches. Maybe they're just smart.

I was under the impression that all teams had a stats department. I'd be extremely disappointed if that were not the case. Reading Mark Cuban's blog, he acts like virtually every team tracks different events (I think I remember him using "tips" as an example) that fans aren't privy to. I think the difference between teams is how much they listen to their stats department. I'm guessing my Wolves doesn't listen very much Wink

Every team probably has stat departments (At the very least someone is keeping track of the box score), it just varies what the stat departments track and how much if any influence their stats have on the coaches/gm.
