I ask this because (a) www.alleyoop.com has been down for a couple of days, (b) John has not had an article at si.com for a couple weeks, (c) he has not registered here, and (d) I have not been successful in reaching him through e-mail.
He did post something at APBR Analysis last week (and I just noticed that he has had a number of articles at the NY Sun), but I was wondering if anyone has had contact with him since then. He probably is on vacation or just really busy, but if John is reading through these posts, I would like to say that IMHO we very much miss his viewpoint here. I would very much like to welcome him here.
Best wishes,
Dan |

Been a few weeks since I've heard from him. Last time he contacted me, he said he was interested in getting in on the discussion here at APBRmetrics. He must be really busy, but nonetheless his columns have been running regularly at the NY Sun.
I am heading down to Georgia next month, so if things get really bad I'll go on an Apocalypse Now mission to find him.

I e-mailed John about a month ago and never heard from him. Of course, he could be ignoring me. _________________ Regards,

Stealing his thunder a little bit, but let's all applaud John for landing himself a job at ESPN Insider. (Kinda weird to me that an outsider gets to write as an Insider. You'll start seeing him in a couple weeks with 3 columns a week. _________________ Dean Oliver

Sounds like good news, especially since Chad Ford and Rob Neyer are the only reasons I currently have an Insider account. It'll be nice to add a third notch to that belt. |

Now why'd John have to go work for the subscriber part of ESPN? I signed up once for a free trial of Insider and thought I'd overpaid. John's stuff might be worth the $5 a month or whatever the fee is now. |

I think, while I may be getting ahead of myself, that John's move to Insider is going to be even better for our community than I realized, and that may be more important than whether non-Insiders can read his stuff.
(It's also worth pointing out that it's not like ESPN chose to hire him, then assigned him to Insider. It's entirely possible they might not have hired him, at least not yet, without the Insider platform. This is, alas, an easier argument for me to make, since I have Insider.)
The thing is, even if they can't read his columns, everyone's going to be exposed to John and his big-picture thinking on the ESPN NBA frontpage. CNNSI doesn't do a ton to promote their guys, possibly because they're fundamentally an extension of the magazine. ESPN, on the other hand, has done a great job pushing Chad Ford and can do something similar with John.
The ESPN gig also makes it that much easier for people like Bill Simmons to take note of what John (and others) are doing.
I don't know about anyone else, but I was pretty fired up today reading John's chat and seeing all the space he got on ESPN's NBA page. Let's hope it continues. He certainly deserves it. |

I think John's growing popularity is a double-edged sword. He's great with the stats stuff, but he's also such a cogent and easily-accessible writer, as evidenced by his Chat and by the PBP/PBF writing. It's one thing to talk about PER, and another to say "please let the [Bimbo Coles] experiment finally end."
Most people might be drawn to the latter, more than the former. _________________ If the statistical revolution won't be televised, I need to call my cable provider, pronto! |

Does anyone know if John will still be writing basketball columns for the New York Sun?
My guess is no... which is too bad for us New Yorkers without Insider accounts.... |

Well he wrote one today (which I think is completely off-base, but I'll discuss that more in a thread later on):

sorry, that's not how it was indended. if anything, it was commenting on how easy it will be for his popularity to grow. _________________ If the statistical revolution won't be televised, I need to call my cable provider, pronto! |
