This guy was a very good PG up until the 1997-98 season. He did have some solid seasons after, but none near his 94-97 seasons. What happened in 9798 and on? Did he get injured?

Anyone remember why he had such a huge drop in production (PER) after 1996-97 season (where he played excellent for Portland)?

What is with the fluctuation PER for PG's in the 90s and even in todays game?

Wanted nothing to do with Dunleavy, was the subject of trade rumors up to and following the 1997 Draft, and was traded the following February.

Some girl named "Tami" may have had something to do with it. As was a late-1998 article about his 19 Bentleys.

It certainly seems as though injuries started to inflict damage on him, as he missed 21 G in '98, 15 (of 50) in '99. But he dropped from career-bests in almost every category in '97, to near career lows the following year, before being dealt.

By the time of his next full season, 2000, he was 29 and thereafter declined every year, done at age 34. This isn't too outrageous for a guy whose game depends on quickness.

I think many of the PG of recent years are multipurpose guards who may or may not get along with their coaches and teammates, and whose role isn't necessarily stable. Being frequently traded only adds to the instability in their stats.

By multi-purpose do you mean they like to score/shoot a lot?

For some reason after the 96-97 season Kenny's game took a huge hit production wise. It was his second year in Portland, so it wasn't like things were brand new for him.

Funny, when I think of Kenny Anderson, I just remember disappointment that he never hit in the pros like he was in college. I remember I thought he was the best freshman in the country ahead of Shaq.

He looks like he had a big drop-off in '96-97, but he bounced back from that pretty well in the strike year. Really, it was the rapid decline from 1999 through 2001 that doomed him. He was 29-31 during that time, a period where it is not at all strange to see players drop off significantly in ability.
