|
|
After Keyon Dooling signed with the Magic, it was said that the Miami Heat would need to dip into their MLE to re-sign Damon Jones for similar money. My guess is that this reason isn't true, that instead it was the Heat choosing to use part of the MLE to avoid going over their cap number. Am I correct, and if so, how is it decided how much the Heat can pay DJ? _________________ The Best Miami Heat Coverage

It would have been more appropriate to ask this question over at the CBA/Business Related forum over at RealGM. Damon Jones signed a one-year contract last summer for $2.5 million. The Heat can resign him to (probably) a five year deal with 8% raises starting at 120% of $2.5 million. But if they wanted to offer a starting salary of $4 million, they would have to use $4 million of their MLE. Thus, if another team comes in with a significant offer the Heat will have a big decision to make. |

Thanks, Dan. I didn't even think of going to realgm. I hope its ok if I ask a followup question.
Does that mean that there's a figure the Heat can't match, and if so, what is it, approximately? _________________ The Best Miami Heat Coverage

Jones is not a restricted free agent, so the Heat do not have the ability to match an offer. But it appears that for a starting salary above $3 million, they would have to use their MLE. And, of course, anything above the MLE they would not be able to offer. |

Yeah, I didn't mean match in the technical way, I meant it terms of making a competitive offer.
So, last question I promise. If they have 3 mil to offer, but it takes 4 mil to get the deal done, is it 1 mil or 4 mil that comes from the MLE? _________________ The Best Miami Heat Coverage
