An interesting side note is that back in the late 1980s, the deadline for this decision was actually on December 24 or 25 (I don't quite remember which). This led to a lot of unhappy Christmas cuts for some fringe players (the one I remember in particular was Granville Waiters in 1987-88 ). The NBA decided, correctly, that the date should be pushed back to let the fringers survive the holidays.
