|

I was thinking today and I was wondering if the NBA starting counting possessions today, how would they do it? Where is the cutoff? Would a possession be considered like in football that where say a rebounder gets the ball, to have possession would it the rebounder have to make a "basketball move"? If there is a loose ball and the team without possession recovers it in the corner and gets trapped would it count as a possession immediately? When he calls timeout? Gets fouled? Another example would be if a ball gets knocked out of bounds, would the opposing team get counted for a possession just for being able to inbound the ball, when the ball is caught or touched by the team inbounding?
Or would it just be an obvious when the ball changes possession and the shot clock resets?
I might be thinking about this in a completely wrong way. This sounded more logical in my head. |

I think you have it mostly right. The same rules that govern reseting the shot clock would largely be used for counting possessions (with the notable exception of offensive rebounds). There may be a few strange cases that don't get covered, but it would mostly work. |
