On a TS% scale
I understand that TS% accounts for that 6% of freethrows that werent actually worth a possession but what if AND1's were tracked (Im assuming they are) wouldnt it just be easier to subtract those from the ft class and just think of them as made 3pters. Makes for a slightly more accurate discription of efficiency doesnt it.
Yes, if you actually identify which free throws were continuations, then it would better to remove them from the denominator instead of estimating them with the 0.44 multiplier. Of course, that's often a lot of extra work for a limited improvement. TS% has been designed to be easily calculable from a box score.
(And you'd subtract the continuation FTA whether or not the player made the free throw.)
Standard box scores don't tell us who had an "And1" play (nor whether they successfully made the free throw or not). Thus your calculation can't be done using standard statistics.
With the advent of play-by-play stats, now we in theory can count those And1 plays. So it's a good idea, but requires ready access to the play-by-play stats.
A nice compromise -- but I doubt we'll see the NBA, ESPN, Elias, or anybody actually do it -- would be to keep the current, old-fashioned box scores, but add a category to the stats that are below the boxes, i.e. in addition to listing technical fouls, flagrant fouls, attendance etc. there could be lines that would look like this:
3Pt or 4Pt Play FTs: Durant 1-2
Technical FTs: Ridnour 1-1
Then we actually would be able to do the calculation that you suggest, without making massive changes in the format of newspaper and online box scores.
Simple idea, easy to do; probably will never happen due to the lack of imagination of the people who provide the stats. Instead, you'll probably have to resort to extracting the data from the play-by-plays at the wonderful BasketballValue.com website (or 82games.com, if they'll give you access to their data).
