|
|
It is well-known that Daryl Morey is a stats guy and as a big fan of Mr. Hollinger and objective analysis in basketball in general, I was very excited that he became my team's GM and was looking forward for us to pick Nick Fazekas. Needless to say, I was shocked and confused when we picked Aaron Brooks, a 5'10" PG, with our 26th pick. His statistics aren't very impressive at all - 22.2 PER, .17 turnover per posession, .28 assists per posession... he shoots a decent .590 TS% but that's probably going to take a dip in the pros because he's so undersized...
Also, he's nowhere to be found on John Hollinger's list based on his new system of evaluation collegiates.
Am I missing something in his stats, or is Daryl Morey just a pretender as a "stats guy"? Also, John, if you're reading this, what was Brooks' rating on your system?
Here's a link to Brooks' numbers http://www.draftexpress.com/viewprofile.php?p=332&page=stats |

I like how Aaron Brooks play. He's speedy, has great jumping ability and he's good shooter. Though, it's really strange for Rockets to spend a first round pick for taking a third-string point-guard behind Rafer Alston and Mike James. Keep in mind that they don't have a power-forward, at the moment. Chuck Hayes is a free agent and Juwan Howard got traded. I'm wondering how they were thinking too... _________________ http://www.hoopsstats.com - Unique NBA Stats |

Chronz, he's had the job 5 minutes and you've already made this judgement?! This forum is about objectivity not gut or personal feelings, this is what we are trying to move away from _________________ .....

Ill wait untill the offseason is over before I call him out, but I just dont see how Brooks can make an impact when the Rox have James/Head/Rafer taking up all the PG minutes. While the Rox still have zero PF.
Hollinger also said hes one of the players he has labeled as a bust so thats not really helping my opinion of a player I know nothing about. |

Well, I'm on the Morey bandwagon again after he stole Luis Scola and Jackie Butler for Spanoulis. |

And Brooks had another impressive outing in the summer league. It's looking like a pretty good offseason for the Rockets. Dealing Juwan Howard for Mike James was also solid.
San Antonio must believe that they can convince Spanoulis to play for them at some point. Or maybe Dennis Lindsey just felt like helping his old team. |

Aaron Brooks has been great in summer league. In his last game recorded 23 pts - 4 ast - 0 turnovers. Rockets also got Scola and Butler for Spanoulis who can't be considered a loss because he didn't want to come back in Houston/NBA... Great trade which makes Rockets a lock for playoffs next year, in my opinion. They resigned also Hayes...

Errr, I might be off-base here, but since when has summer league performance proven anything? I understand that a horrible summer league performance might be a tip-off to future issues, but great performance doesn't seem to be predictive of a quality player. |

Brooks was very impressive in summer league...he's small, but he showed that he really can score, but do it efficiently (very good shooter), and I didn't see what the scouts saw in his lack of ability to run an offense...he seemed to really know what he was doing the whole time. |

Summer league is basically worthless as an indicator, but it's nice to see Brooks did well. But the posts above are right -- I don't get the Brooks pick, but man that Scola trade was unbelievable. |
