Hi there. My name is Gregg. I'm 27, a hoops junkie. I currently live in Philadelphia where I am a graduate student in Central and Eastern European Studies at La Salle University. I spent the past five years as a journalist at a bunch of different newspapers up and down the east coast, none of which you've heard of. My number one basketball team will forever be the 76ers. But this year I have been really happy to see both the Suns and the Sonics become such good teams by introudcing new styles of gameplay.
I am a lot more of a college fan than I am a fan of the NBA. I think the college game's longer shot clock and different rules allow for more styles and variation in the ways different teams can be built.
I've always found myself rooting for teams that do things differently. My all-time favorite college teams are the Princeton teams of the early 90's, the Loyola Marymount teams, the current Gonzaga run and most teams coached by Bobby Knight, whom I think uses a really interesting and aesthetically pleasing motion offense. The most interesting team this year, I think, is UW-Milwaukee who run a pressing defense and what appears to be a really odd variation of a flex offense which really results in a lot of open looks.
Thank god I found a home for other basketball dorks. |

Y'know, I use to call myself a geek, but I like 'dork' better. It's going on my business card immediately. _________________ ed |

Hi everyone. My name's Jonathan. I can guess that I'm at least one of the 5 youngest members here (I'm only 17), so my math background won't likely lead to me making very many posts. However, I do enjoy simply reading the statistical discussions and learning as much as I can. I, probably like a lot of others, was drawn to statistical analysis through Moneyball (being an Oakland A's fan) and that quickly led me to my equally favorite sport, basketball. I must painfully admit that I'm a diehard Warriors fan, also. So, that's about it. Like I said, I won't post much, but I look forward to reading what I can. _________________ -Jonathan |

Hmm, I guess I should have done this too.
My name is Gabe (duh), and I'm currently getting my MA in statistics part time, while working full time in a job that only very marginally has anything to do with statistics.
I'm more interested in the analysis and comparison of statistics than the decision of what to collect and the collection of said statistics. _________________ If the statistical revolution won't be televised, I need to call my cable provider, pronto! |

Hello to everyone,
I happened to be going through the monthly stats for sonicscentral and decided that I'd finally register at this forum. My journey into perpetual dorkdom began at a young age when I realized that I enjoyed more than just watching basketball, but that my interests also included regular random analysis of NBA box scores. My early obsession has since developed to be a hobby of embarrassing proportions.
Anyhow, my name is exactly as I registered it and I am a moderator for sonicscentral.com. I work for a multimedia company in the Seattle area and have worked on websites for several pro sports organizations. Yes, the Sonics are far and away my favorite NBA team. However, I follow rugby and Premier League football, the NHL, equestrian events and everything in between.
This seems like a great forum and I look forward to contributing. _________________ Your perception of the obvious is quite remarkable! |

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone knows of a database with game by game numbers for teams? I know that official NBA has team splits that imply the existance such a database, but I have been able to find it anywhere. |

Ed, you just impregnated me with your knowledge! Any chance you have a similar link for team totals? _________________ Rock over London, Rock on Chicago. |

Use those files with caution. I looked at them a few months ago and found numerous errors. For example, I think the Minnesota Timberwolves had like 17,000 team points in the 1992 file. _________________ Regards,

I have a question. I have been working on a spreadsheet project for analyzing college basketball games, but I have been unable to find complete stats for every team I am interested in following. ESPN.com has excellent stats for each team, but they do not list what that team has surrendered (a season total for the opponents is what I am looking for). Is there anywhere that this information can be found in a format that can be selected and copied into Excel? |

It's a bit painstaking, but you can get defensive team information for most teams from ESPN as well. Under conference stats, you'll find team leaders in DFG%, DTO/G, etc. _________________ Dean Oliver

Another painstaking way of getting the data would be to go to the individual school websites. Most of them probably have the statistical data you're looking for. It just might take you a while to collect it. _________________ If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.

Hey everybody:
Also a new member to this board. I'm a 28 year old lawyer in New York and have been clamoring for a site like this for years. I found out about the "revolution" through Knickerblogger and I'm busy educating myself about the statistics and analysis being used. Like a lot of you I'm no mathematician or statistician but I'm not numbers retarded so hopefully I can figure things out. I'm a big Knicks fan so I'm hoping they start using some of this insight into developing their team (unfortunately its not going to happen - although with the new ownership battle maybe Isaiah and the current brass will be a casualty). I am also a HUGE stephon marbury fan and would love to see him finally play for a successful winning team. I plan on lurking, occassionally posting. But thanks for setting this up. You're doing an awesome job! |
