That seems to be assigning a bit much of making shots to luck. Detroit knows it's playing against Phoenix and wants to limit the Suns' fast-break attempts, so the Pistons execute their offense more crisply, improve their shot selection, take higher-percentage shots.

But what happens when Detroit executes its offense, gets open shots, but misses and Phoenix fastbreaks them to death. Do we then say that Detroit failed to control tempo?

The Sonics-Wizards game earlier this season may be an example. Each team had about 95 possessions in that game -- a touch slow for the Wizards at that time, a high number for the Sonics. Did the Wiz dictate tempo, though? That's not the way I saw it. The Wizards played fast, but gave up a number of open shots in that game. But the Sonics missed a lot of those open shots (4-13 on wide open looks according to my scoresheet). So, did the Wizards control the tempo, or did the pace just sorta happen?

I lean more towards the latter.
