This great hack doesn't seem to work with ESPN's new box score format. Would be much obliged if cherokee could find the time for an update. |

I noticed this problem as well last night. I am glad someone else saw it too. |

No, I'm sorry (see page 2, plus I don't follow college basketball) |

Update for this season, although the format may still change once the real games start
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7817
Comes now with color highlighting for particularly good/bad factors. Threshold is set at roughly the 20 and 80 percentiles. Feedback, positive or negative, greatly appreciated.
And there's also a Yahoo version, Yahoo4Factors
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/36000
Should work as well with live games. No color highlighting here. There may be small differences with ESPN factors since team turnovers (they mostly are shot clock violations) are not available at Yahoo. As an add-on, a link to the PbP at ESPN is inserted ... and has worked so far in preseason. |

Thanks again. Reinstalled the scripts and greasemonkey to enable them. |

|

First of all, thank you very much for this little project Cherokee. It is very cool.
My computations that I've been doing by hand don't jive with the numbers on the box scores. And actually, the numbers on Ybox scores and ESPN box scores are noticeably different. For example: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=281024013 and
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/boxscore?gid=2008102413
That in itself is not such a big deal, but I guess is there a link or something where I can see how you compute your numbers? If not that, I will detail how I've been coming up with my numbers and perhaps you can tell me where I am going wrong.
To get possessions I am: FGA-OR+TO +(.44xFTA). I should be able to do this for both teams and see each's pace. You apparently average the two.
From there for efficiency I go :points scored/possessions *100.
And finally for pace I go: 48*(tm Poss+opp. poss.) / (2* (tm MP/5)......the mp being 240 unless overtime.
So, any idea where I am going wrong? I ask this mostly because when trying to compare my team's pace to last year's numbers on Basketball Reference, I'd like to be comparing apples to apples.
Again, thanks so much and any help from anyone would be appreciated. |

BBR calculates possessions (and therefore pace) in a more accurate (and complex) manner than the old FGA-OR+TO+(.44*FTA) formula:
Code: | Possessions = 0.5 * ((Tm FGA + 0.4 * Tm FTA - 1.07 * (Tm ORB / (Tm ORB + Opp DRB)) * (Tm FGA - Tm FG) + Tm TOV) + (Opp FGA + 0.4 * Opp FTA - 1.07 * (Opp ORB / (Opp ORB + Tm DRB)) * (Opp FGA - Opp FG) + Opp TOV)) |
