Using the lineup data at www.basketballvalue.com, I performed a mini-study on the impact of shot blockers on offensive success. You can find the article here:

Edit: The article has been updated.

This is a nice summary Jon. Can I ask for two more pieces of information:

1. What proportion of plays have a 'top 20' shot blocker in them?
2. Is the League average the same as the Offensive rating for situations where there is no top shot blocker playing (given the graph I would expect it to be slightly higher, but how much so would depend on answer to Q1)?

I really like this, it automatically makes me wonder about a whole bunch of stuff. Well Done.

Yes, very interesting.

Plus, I always like to see when people use the data on basketballvalue for good analysis.

Thanks,
Aaron

PS Sorry I've been quiet lately, I've been a little tied up of late. I hope to be more active again soon.

Wow! Because of one simple typo, those original numbers you saw were off (sorry!). I updated the article to reflect the changes. The typo was actually not including Shaquille O'Neal, who, like in many other areas, had a huge impact. As for your other questions...

1. 17,870 of the 34,358 rows (52.01%) contain a top 20 shot blocker on either the home or away side (obviously there is some overlap).

2. At home, lineups facing an opponent without a top shot blocker had an offensive rating of 109.65. On the road, they were at 105.43.

Interesting study.

Are you able to discern how many more blocks there were in the games(per 100 possessions) with the top shot blockers?

It seems like if you could see the amount of blocks, verses the net difference in offensive rating, you could have a solid base for a proxy blocks "value."

I suppose Impact against top stealers is your next article? I was hoping more correlation between blocks and general defense.

Can you give the top 20 overall defensive lineups? (with considerable playtime of course)

Steals would be a good idea but I wonder if the results would be as strong. A couple of forced turnovers on the perimeter may not have the same effect as an inside presence.

Here is the data you requested...Sorry for the formatting!

Thanks. A lot of hustlers and few blockers.

Would you think Pace might be helping at home?

I suppose it's possible. It's weird you don't see more lineups from the Celtics, Spurs, Rockets, etc. Yet we see lineups from teams like the Suns and Raptors.
