and if so, what do they think of it?
I don't mean specific teams, but the NBA central office.
I wonder if they are knowingly putting forth a simplistic "efficiency" formula, while tracking more complex things behind the scenes.
Dean? Dan? John? Ed? Have they ever made contact with you? |

John Maxwell has been our biggest link to the NBA league office. He let a lot of people know about us. I have talked to several people there and they are interested in what we're doing. Not all the time, but as things arise and they think to contact me, I definitely try to be helpful and it's gone well. They have a ton of data, but they need analysis also and that's where I've been able to help. Even when they don't know they need analysis, it's useful to have done all the analysis I have done because I can answer questions that they think up on the spot that come out of our other conversations.
Certainly, some of the work we're doing here feeds into that. I do think that the league will look to get help (i.e., hire) on this front, too... being somewhat optimistic. _________________ Dean Oliver

In my less frequent than Dean's contact with NBA coaches and front office types, I've received responses that run the gamut from "I'm not a stat guy..." to real interest and some great questions. Generally, when I've talked about some kind of statistical analysis (defensive box scores, for example), I get questions about process -- example: How do you decide when a shooter is "open"? -- then some comments about what the data shows. |

John has posted here and over on the previous incarnation of this site. He was lead PR guy for the WNBA but no longer is unfortunately. John made a lot of progress with the league to get them to notice what we have done in a lot of areas. There are now multiple people within the league office who are interested. None of them are pushing quite as hard as John but they're still helpful. _________________ Dean Oliver

Is John Maxwell still with the WNBA or NBA? Or out of the league/s completely? If so, too bad, I know he was an important part of getting the WNBA defensive box score project going. |
