This project uses the 09/10 Season totals (provided by Doug Stats) to build a caricature of the player.

Really fun tool for player comparison and often hilariously approximate results when compared to the real player.

Check out the tool and other results:

Love this.

I always thought Joe Alexander was a good athlete. But it sure seems like he doesn't have an NBA body.

Hilarious.

You need to fix the caption on eyes and eyes aspect ratio. Eyes = Assists/Turnovers. Eyes aspect ratio = Assist to Turnover ratio. What's the difference? The first is actually assists, I think...

Pops Mensah-Bonsu is a black hole. Wow.

Jason Kidd is really weird.

Kendrick Perkins really has a big mouth... until you look at Rasheed.

These are unbelievable. Way better than Chernoff faces, because basketball stats actually can be mapped, approximately, to body parts.

I could imagine dividing rebounds into offensive and defensive rebounds by using something like leg width or spread leg angle (wider angle == more offensive rebounds, either in absolute terms or relative to defensive rebounds). Or maybe foot size to measure off rebd %, keeping leg length to measure total rebounds.

Maybe arm angle to measure fouls per minute? Or maybe nose size to measure fouls per minute? (Some faces might be too small.) Hmm, or nose size to measure 3PT attempts, and nose "aspect ratio" to measure 3PT%?

Ears and hair are still unused, but it's hard to think what NBA stats to connect with those ... maybe FTA or FT%.

Loved the mouth size idea, but maybe technical fouls could've been measured with eyebrows, more techs ==> angrier eyebrow angle.

Do long arms down at the character's sides evoke shotblocking?

Maybe arm length could be Blocks + Steals, with the angle of the arms determined by the Block/Steal ratio.

Dalembert would have long arms almost straight up.
Chris Paul would have long arms almost straight out to the sides.
Biedrins' long arms at 45 degrees ...

Ryan Bowen and Will Conroy have no legs!

And Marcin Gortat looks like cyclops.

Good thoughts ... a variation on that idea: the player's left arm (right arm to us facing him) could be blocked shots, and would always be pointing up. The player's right arm could be steals, and would be pointing down (or at a downward angle).

Just posted a new visualization:

http://hoopism.com/?p=205

Looks at minutes played for each player for every franchise. Also offering PDF downloads.

Should have something next week dealing with assists using the play by play data provided by Ryan Parker.

Amazing.

How about offering team infographs? You already got player carricatures, including team based stats would draw huge attention.
