I'll tabulate everyone's +/- and give the numbers to Aaron to run. |

I looked over the agenda and it seems nothing like the Sloan conference as this one focuses almost entirely on the marketing/business aspect of sports. Regardless, I'm interested somewhat in going (mainly because its a sports conference and I'm jealous of the Sloan one) and wondering what you would be interested in hearing about? Do you care about the marketing side or are you just interested in what another sports conference is like? |
Mainly if there are presentations and/or people that would be of interest to, well, the types of people on this apbrmetrics forum. In terms of research presentations at the conference, seems unlikely. But if someone there starts talking about NBA teams utilizing more quant analyst types, or the various firms that supply data and analysis to NBA teams and clients, that'd be of interest too. |

Video of the "stat geeks" actually taking to the court would be a viral hit. |

I will be attending the conference. I currently live in Boston, so I'd be interested in any of those things (food, pickup basketball, etc.) surrounding the conference. |

nice blog entry. yeah, 2s and 1s can be frustrating. although if you're playing on a non-spaced out court, it's added incentive to space the floor. if a lot of players are weaker outside shooters, their respective lower 3pt% balances out the eFG%. if that makes sense...
that said, im all for 3s and 2s to 21. it is strange people dont like embracing this. _________________ http://pointsperpossession.com/

"2 and 1" was the final nail in the coffin for pickup ball around here. Guys just took the first long shot; stopped passing, screening, driving, playing any real defense. Ugh.
Whenever I tried to get people to play by 3s and 2s, it was like, "Man, that's too complicated". I guess 1 and twice-that is easier.
If anyone could do it, stat geeks should. I advocate a bonus point for calling the name of the player you're emulating. "James Worthy!" with a running across-the-lane half-hook. "Isiah!" and a teardrop off the glass. _________________ `

I once tried to implement George Carlin Rules on a pickup game -- ie 25 points for a made basket off another player's head. No dice. (Similarly, my attempt to implement George Carlin Rules in a softball game -- pitcher hits the batter, batter's out -- went nowhere.)
Unfortunately, my days of competitive pickup ball are far behind me. Antoine Walker-like, my fortunes are much reduced, and I am left playing against the neighbour's kids in my driveway on a five foot rim. (And dominating, mind you, but still...) But I would be happy to coach a nerd heavy pickup game. _________________ ed |

Those sound more like Rock and Jock rules.
And I would love -- love -- to play in that game, but I've already sacrificed one ankle to multiple injuries from pickup games. Alas. |

That was the standard rule at UCSF. You would really see people D-up hard on the 3pt line when the other team had 18 and it was close (or colossal failures of people defending off the screen). Much bitching followed a team losing 21-20 or 21-19 on a 3. |

Does anyone need a roommate for the conference? I have a reservation at the Westin Boston Waterfront, right next door to the conference center, for Friday and Saturday night. It's a room with two double beds, so I'd just as soon split the $300 bill with someone else going to the conference. Feel free to send me a private message if you're interested.
I'm super excited for the conference (I'm giving a talk for the research paper contest), and the prospect of a nerdy pickup game. It'll be great to meet you all. |

What time is this pick-up game? I am booking a flight and might be able to play if it is early enough.
Best wishes,
Dan |

I'd go further and say that even having 3pt and 2pt FGs is a bad idea for pickup games -- all FGs should be one point. Outside shooters in pickup games already get their reward by not having to deal with the pushing and foulling inside (no FTs in pickup games, so no bonus increase in your TS% by going inside). |
