Sheduled for February 10 is a conference for sports analytics that sounds pretty interesting. I know that Daryl Morey will be there, along with some other people who do our kind of work. Unfortunately, it is being held in Boston -- not a big college town. However, if you're in the area, this may be a good opporunity to make some connections and get a feel for the market, or just to get an idea of what other people are working on.

Website and Blurb:

http://sloansportsconference.com/

The inaugural MIT Sloan Sports Business Conference is scheduled for February 10 th at MIT's Sloan School of Management. The conference is hosted by MIT Sloan's Entertainment, Media and Sports Club.
Conference Goals

To create a forum for discussing the increasing role of analytics in the sports industry. The conference will bring together sports industry professionals (executives and leading researchers) with students interested in the changing dynamics of the sports industry. This will be a unique educational opportunity and will provide exclusive occasions for learning, interacting, and networking.

Focus for 2006

Analytical Sports Management. Sports industry professionals from the Major US Professional Leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL) as well as executives and experts involved in the sports world (ESPN, Fila) will gather to provide their perspective on the evolving role of analytics in business and sports.

I wish I could be there. The opportunity to ask for a grant, er.... meet some of the leaders in sports analysis could inspire me to get off my arse and start studying.

Is anyone planning on attending? I would love to go, and might, but it's highly unlikely. I would love to hear what was discussed.

I'd planned to, but it looks like I won't be able to go. Friggin' work.

Anybody know the NBA types who will be in attendance and if there will be any focus on basketball?

These answers might coax me to cross the river and spend $100.

Look at the Agenda and Speakers. Dean Oliver and Sam Presti are scheduled to speak, in addition to several others.

Daryl Morey (of the Rockets, formerly of the Celtics) and Mike Zarrin (of the Celtics) will be presenting as well.

I'm not sure if you're kidding or not, but Boston is a HUGE college town. I'd say the biggest on the East Coast.

Just registered myself.

Would anyone be interested in getting together for an APBRmetrics lunch or dinner or something? I think it would be neat to put some faces to the names.

It sounds like Saturday night may be the best time for people to get together. Nothing is arranged in detail so far, but many of us won't get in until late on Friday or will be busy on F night. Steve Schran lives up there -- I'm nominating him to do some of the organizing, with probably the first task being a collection of names of those who will be there...

I would be interested in that. I'm in southern Rhode Island, so it's about an hour trip for me up to Boston. The Celtics are also playing the Nets Friday night, if anyone wants to splurge on horrible $10 balcony seats at the Fake Garden.

From This Is Spinal Tap (1984):

Quote:
Ian Faith: The Boston gig has been cancelled...
David St. Hubbins: What?
Ian Faith: Yeah. I wouldn't worry about it though, it's not a big college town.

It is depressing to note that Spinal Tap is now 23 years old, and can only be used as a guaranteed reference to an audience an ever-aging cohort of film fans. A black day in humour. If you asked how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.

You planning on going, Ed? That would really take the conference up to an 11. I mean, once you're at 10, where can you go? But this conference goes to 11.

Spinal Tap was released within days of my birth, and it's one of my all-time favorites. Hilarious.
