Dean Oliver quit his job.

At the age of 34, Oliver gave up his comfortable work as an environmental engineer for Environ in order to try to make a living out of what had formerly largely been a hobby, statistical analysis of the NBA. But Oliver's journey to the NBA began long before he went out looking for a new job in January 2004.

Good work Kevin.

A couple editing notes -- Isn't Dean's site the Journal of Basketball Studies? I think you have it as JoB Statistics.

And, there's a "talk" in there where I think you meant "take".

A very good article though. I thought you summarized well one of the key things I've learned from Dean -- useful player evaluation isn't about rankings, but about the ability to fill roles within the team's design.
