Below are the records for teams playing against other top ten teams in the league (according to the Sagarin ratings). I have included the win-loss records, win-loss percentage, win-loss standard error, and the 95% confidence interval.
Seattle has only lost twice against top ten teams - once to San Antonio without Ray Allen and once in a barnburner to the Suns. They have twice won back-to-back on the road vs. top ten teams. Given how dominant Seattle has been against these top teams, especially on the road, I think the Sonics should get heavy consideration for winning the championship. Especially since they have played very well against the Spurs.
And for those of you concerned about the small sample size, this is about the same number of games as a whole NFL season.
Code: | TEAM W-L PCT (SE) [95% CI]
SAS 12-6 66.7% (11.1%) [39.5%, 93.8%]
PHO 7-8 46.7% (12.9%) [14.6%, 78.7%]
SEA 12-2 85.7% (9.4%) [62.2%, 100.%]
MIA 6-7 46.2% (13.8%) [11.1%, 81.2%]
DAL 8-7 53.3% (12.9%) [21.3%, 85.4%]
SAC 7-11 38.9% (11.5%) [10.8%, 67.0%]
MEM 6-12 33.3% (11.1%) [06.2%, 60.5%]
DET 6-5 54.5% (15.0%) [15.6%, 93.5%]
CLE 4-8 33.3% (13.6%) [00.0%, 68.2%]
HOU 7-9 43.8% (12.4%) [13.1%, 74.4%] |

All I gotta say is -- Premature prognostication is what had us the worst team in the west and it was wrong. It can do the same for the playoffs. We just gotta get better. _________________ Dean Oliver

"Premature prognostication" is kind of an oxymoron as all prognostication is premature. And it always can be wrong. But I like having some data rather than almost no data (as at the beginning of the season). |

You're right, of course. But, hey, we gotta stay motivated. I only added the "premature" when I realized the alliteration. Premature prognostication portends problematic prospects of poor performance. Just in a mood this morning. _________________ Dean Oliver
